How to go wireless

Featured Replies

I could use some help here guys.  My friend calls me the other day and asks me how can he get internet on his laptop that he is going to carry around in his truck for his business.  He does not have any computers what so ever and this laptop is the first for him. ( I know how could anyone not have internet and run a business but he has done well up to now with out it.)

I don't know much about the wireless thing myself and could really use the help so I can help him out.   He did mention somthing about a card that you can use to get wireless.   Has anyone heard of this.   Any way could anyone give me advice on how to do this.

He will probably need to go to whoever his cellular carrier is and get a wireless card from them.  Theoretically speaking he would be able to access the internet as long as he has a wireless signal.  They usually run about $50ish for the card and about $50 month for the service.

The other option would be to put a wireless b/g/n network card in the computer, however this would require him to be near a WIFI hotspot that he could use.  This may not be the best option if he is driving all over or in businesses or locations that don't offer WiFi.

Have him go talk to his wireless carrier.

That would be the best option, IMO

If he has T-Mobile, he can get a Hotspot account, which let's him surf via wi-fi at any wi-fi enabled area (home, Starbucks, Barnes & Nobles, Airports, train stations, etc.). The cost is something like 10 buck extra per month. Outside of Hotspot locations, he would then just surf over the cell phone network.

As for other carriers, I don't know their rate plans.

Either way, he will need a wireless card for the laptop (some newer laptops have them built in). The card is cheap or free these days.

Hope that helps!

Depending on what he needs it for, he might be better getting the iphone or one of its copies.

Just a suggestion.

The advice about talking to the wireless carrier is the best, I have the iPhone and its great, although for business i don't know if thats a great idea. If all he needed was easy e-mail access and  a way to communicate with clients etc. then it wouldn't be a problem. But if he needed to make documents or spreadsheets, he is better off with the laptop. JMO
