Big Bass, small pond - How to catch?

Featured Replies

Hey Folks-

I'm in Georgia, and yesterday went to a very small private pond, about 3-4 acres....

In very shallow water, about 3-4 feet, I saw a HUGE LM Bass cruising around - probably over 10 pounds.....I was well-hidden, and threw everything I could think of - plastics, topwater, etc.....Wouldn't strike at anything....

Any tips/tricks for how to get her to bite, whether she's feeding or not? Man, she was HUGE.

BEN

Run a spinnerbait in front of her nose and see if you can get a reaction strike or make her mad enough to grab the lure. Just what I'd try.

Welcome aboard!

I wouldn't concentrate on one fish, if you have seen one there are probably more. Target "big bass" in general and you will be rewarded accordingly. In low light that might mean topwater, buzzbaits or jerkbaits. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits also catch big bass. However, most big bass are tricked by soft plastics and jigs.

I highly recommend fishing mid-day. This is when the majority of giants are caught. For me, that means 6" Senko, Fat Ika, 5 1/2" Mizmo Grandes (tube) or 1/2 oz jigs.

Good luck!

Weightless finesse style worm.  I like Bass Assassin's 'Charm Assassin'.

I'd throw a watermelon or pearl white zoom super fluke.... if that doesn't do the trick- I'd try a senko... and still if that doesn't work I'd try a berkley powerworm or a baby brush hog in watermelon texas rigged.....

Good luck... and hang on...........Reel him in son!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem with this one fish, tossed everything I could think at it...it eventually hit a 3.5in black/blue beaver claw T-rigged maybe give that a shot?

I cought a 10.2 lb bass last week in a 3 acre pond on a white zoom horny toad frog and reeled it across the top of the water and she swallowed it. Then yesterday I cought a 7.1 lb bass on a rattle trap in about 6-8 feet of water in this 10 acre pond near my house. I know for a fact there is this bass in there soemone cought 3 years ago that weighed 12. soemthing and i hope she is still in there but i am having trouble finding her. The pond is no deeper than 10-12 feet. Any suggestions on how I could try and catch this big bass? theres alot of silt now growing in there and now too much cover but some trees that i have put in there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks~

Big bass fisher---  seems like you are off to a good start!!!!  Now in the summer pattern, I'd focus on the early/late bite.....

Big baits for big bass???  yes it is true... so I'd try a Zara Spook... and a buzz-bait.... maybe a big Double Willow leaf spinnerbait around some lay down logs, if there are any there...???

One bait I have not tried that is getting a lot of attention are those snake baits run along the top of the water.....  I've heard reports of folks landing some huge moss-backs on them, so mebbe you might try one????

Last but not least, I hate Jig fishing... don't know why?? but my biggest bass ever came over 20 years ago on a huge jig/trailer combo.... so there's another one you might try????

I hate to tell this story cause it wasn't my fish!!!!!! but my dad caught a  Huge big fat 8.8  LUNKER....texas rigged weightless on a plastic worm swimming it slowly on top of the water!!!!!!!!!

Also try a 10 inch worm... maybe in a chartreuse color???
