Coke!

I call every "soft drink" a coke along with 99.9% of Texas. "What would you like to drink sir"? "Coke". "Ok, and what kind of coke would you like"? Then us Texans specify which "coke" we want  8-).

Jake p.,when i was in Tx. we just got settled in and had some neighbor kids help us move a little.I asked what they wanted and they said "coke" so that what i got them and then they looked at me and said "oh we wanted some dr.pepper".....Talk about confusing.....I hated that.

And just to confuse some people i also say "fountain drink". ;D

I call carbonated drinks soda. I drink coke. You can have all the pepsi you want.

My brother went to Indiana to visit a friend and upon arrival they stopped at hooters. When the waitress asked my brother what he wanted to drink he said Coke and she said "Coca Cola?". Then my brother says no, I would like Dr.Pepper. He said it confused the heck out of the lady and then he expained that we call them all "Cokes". Apparently you northerners call it something like "pop".

Oh yea, did I read a George Lopez reference in that post? "What kind of fountain drinks do you have"?................."One minute please, hey what is fountain drink"?OOOOOOOHHHH soda".

Wait, I thought down south its pop, and up north its soda.

Here in my part of NY its soda. A Coke is a Coke. A Dr. Pepper is a Dr. Pepper. Got it?

In Maryland if ya want a Coke you ask for a coke,,mountain dew you ask for mountain dew ect

I'm with you on the "Coke" thing, but I think the 99.9% of Texans is dropping. I am disturbed that I hear the word "soda" more and more (even locally). I know that's kind of stupid, but that's a piece of Texas heritege that I'd like to see around a while longer.

BTW- Once before someone posted a color coded map showing what soft drinks are called nationwide. "Soda" was mostly western, "Soda Pop" scattered throughout, "Pop" was a pre-dominantly northern term (although residents in Oklahoma use it), "soft drink" was scattered, and "Coke" was used mostly in Texas and some of the south/mid-south.

I'll stick with "Coke". 8-)

Growing up in Missouri, I called it "Pop". My folks were from Oklahoma  and the local flavored soft drinks were made by "Polly's Pop" and that's what we drank. Then, when I went in the USAF, most of my runnin' buds called it "Soda". That stuck and I started calling it "Soda", and I still do. My wife and her family are all native Texans. They don't call it "Coke"; they always ask if you would like a "Cold Drink". I have learned that when ordering one here that I ask for a "Coca Cola" or other specific kind, since "Coke" is generic for a "Soda" ;D

If your in-laws are from Dallas, that doesn't count.    Dallas has had so much influx of Northerners over the years that the "Texas" dialect has all but disappeared in some circles there.  Go over to Ft. Worth and ask somebody about a "coke".  

Really though, I DO hear the word "cold drink" used around Texas in other parts of the state as well.

Nobody here do the DEW? Mountain Dew is the greatest thing since fruity pebbles.

Being from Shreveport, LA, which sometimes feels almost like a dallas suburb, I called soft drinks cokes all my childhood, regardless of brand.  Then someone explained to me the economic dangers of name-brand product associations (coke to refer to all soft drinks, band-aids to refer to all medicated adhesive strips, etc...) and since then I have tried to be more specific.  I still slip up though.

As a native Michigander we call our Vernors pop!

I remember when I moved to NY. I thought that the term soda was snooty.
