I used the interlock and the fast snaps and all failed on wacky rig.

I palomar knotted straight to the hook and my troubles went away.

I'm not gonna lie, I used snaps on everything until recently. Within the last month I stopped using them altogether because I had 2 open up on me. I'll never know how big those fish really were!

I use them on hard crankbaits, but not on jigs, spinnerbaits, or plastics.

No, a snap is not necessary for a wacky rig.

Use a straight shank hook tied with a Palamor knot.

I used to use them when I first started fishing.  Now that I can tie a palomar quickly, I hardly use snaps on anything.

I don't use snaps at all and on wacky rigs or jigs or any bait that the fish gets are very good look at what they are about to eat I would think would be bad.

I would only use snaps on things that are going to get that reaction bite.  Even then though I don't think I would use them.

If it 's an excuse for not checking your line frequently and your only motivation is to change lures quickly then no, you shouldn 't use snaps.

If you 're going to purchase "El Cheapo" snaps then don 't purchase snaps.

By "fail" what do you mean.  Did the snap open up on you or did the wire break?  Was there still part of the snap on the end of your line?  Are you using braid (snaps only stand up to a certain line rating before they will fail too)?

Yea they opened up on me, these were some visciuos strikes, I'm using braid line by fire line.  When I changed up to palomar knotting to the hook I got one he!! of a hit and my drag wasn't set right and the line BROKE  It was an awsome thing to experiance

If you think about it, single hooks are moslty used for soft plastics. With that said, you could change soft plastics every 5 minutes and it would not affect your knot. (You are using the same hook) For different colored spinners, crankbaits, poppers, etc. your knot is affected. You either have to cut your line and tie a new knot, or use a snap.

Does that make sense? It seems kind of hard to explain...

This would lead me to believe that your snaps are fine, but you are not using the correct size for the line that you are using (or your drag setting).  When using too small of a snap, the snap becomes the weak link in the chain between you and the fish.

Because braid does not stretch it is more inclined to break on really hard hook sets with the drag tightened down all the way.  Braid's "shock" strength is not nearly as much as it's "normal" strength.  Fish Chris talks about this a lot in his responses regarding fishing light braid.

I never have or ever will use the snaps. Two reasons:

1. They keep you from retying as often as you should

2. Just another item that could fail between you and the fish

Thanks for that one, I'll take a closer look at my line, I do know its fireline braid but I forget the wieght, I'll have to check it when I get home

If you want to use snaps with braid then check out the ones that T-Rig linked to above.  Those look to be rated high enough to handle braid.

use them all the time don't have any problems, but have a leader in between hook and snap
