This could be a very oppinionated subject. Let's try to post and despite different opinions lets keep it classy.

Having been a former official for 25years there are ways to have taken care of this situation. All you have to do is call some fouls and the problem gets taken care of.

A technical here or there for unsportsmanlike conduct and no more coach. Next coach goes and no more game.

Any fans cheering a steal with a 60-0 lead "unsportsmanlike". You wouldn't have to go this far before people get the "hint"

PLEASE keep it civil or don't bother to post

much appreciated FFI - AKA Matt Crum

Flat out POOR!!!!!!!!

A coach that runs up the score to 100-0 at a Christian school...PLEASE!!!!!

School...by the way doesn't matter....it could have been bitty league in East Podunk (if you live there ...I apologize!)

But to me "personally" the coach did not reflect the "message" that his school is based around.

My two cents, and will not respond to others about anything...threads have been shut down for that reason...JUST MY OPINION.

But I will enjoy reading the other responses!

PS----LIFE IS NOT FAIR....I KNOW.

"Do Unto Others.........     (Think I have heard that somewhere????)

I think it was a very poor decision.  Its also easy to get caught up in the moment.  Especially for the fans, but the coach should have realized what was going on.

Poor sportsmanship.  No class whatsoever.  What was the losing coach doing though?  Many may not agree with this but the losing coach should of had his team foul the dog snot out of the other team whenever they tried for a 3 pointer.  I know violence is never the answer but doing what the winning team did isn't acceptable and YOU MUST stick up for yourself. I played H.S and College baseball and as a pitcher, I have been ordered by the coach on few occasions to aim for the body.

We beat a team 108-8 once in junior high.  At half the coach instructed us not to press and no steals.  No 3's at the end of the third.

I'm sorry but I just can't leave this alone.  I can't help but think of the losing coach as being a coward to let his team take a beating like that.  The winning team did nothing but take advantage and kick the weaker team in the head when they were on the ground.

Yes, losing is part of the game and every child should learn and experience losing but they shouldn't have to endure embarrassment.

This really ticks me off.  I think perhaps I will go outside for a while.

They should not have pressed.

Steals and 3's should have still been fair game.

This coming from a guy whose team went without a win my junior and senior year.

The pressing all game is the only thing that was unsportsmanlike.

  • Super User

If you don't want to lose, don't play the game.

Bizz,

They should of stopped stealing, but I agree with you on the 3 pointers.  I bet it would of been worse if they weren't jacking those 3's.  I guarantee a bunch of high school girls are going to make a lower % of 3's than lay-ups.

In the game I mentioned earlier where we stomped a team pretty bad I remember thinking no 3's thats dumb.  Our coach was trying to do the right thing, but he turned the game into a lay up drill.

I wonder if there is more to the story than we know?

Coaches may not like each other; the losing school destroyed the winning school in a past game and this was payback; someone said something that should have not been said.

When I officiated high school basketball I called the first half close to get control and then let it a little loose in the final two quarters, with eyes open and whistle ready for the final two minutes if the game was close.

I also spoke with the players, warning them about things they were doing or things they did well.  The players appreciated my input and I got control of the game from a psychological perspective.

And a stern look to the coach, bench and players also produced positive results.  Especially if you stand after you blow the whistle and stare at them.

I agree with the above posts. Even Burley's!!!!

Just food for thought.  :)

I believe the girls on the "winning" team asked to forfeit, because they didn't want a victory like that.

Matt, I just dont see how steals are the same as a full court press. Should they have just opened up the lanes and let them drive?

If you are playing heads up D, you dont need to full court press with a 50 point cushion. But not trying to steal is not playing heads up.

If I were on the losing team, I would be MUCH more embarassed by them not stealing when they could, then I would have been by losing by 100.

Bizz,

I see your point in a round about way, and not under any circumstance do I think they should of let the other team score.  The winning team, with a 50 point lead, could of played tough heads up pressure defense without actually going for a steal.  The press was a much bigger deal, but I think the right thing to do was to stop stealing the ball.  Especially if some of the steals were coming from help defenders when the ball handler turned their back.

  • Super User

I guess I agree with the help defender part. But if they tried to cut to the hole and the defender just had to swipe in a get the ball, no way should they be expected to pass up that imo.

I feel sorry for the girls that lost, but I don't have any hard feelings because of the score. I think its pretty lame a coach can't find SOME way for his girls to score one goal. Last time I checked there was no shot clock in high school. A smart coach would have held the ball the whole game. The other team did nothing wrong and they shouldn't be shunned.

I played High School ball with a team that deep into the state playoffs my sophomore year, and went to the state championship my junior year. Being one of the premier teams in the state, we were invited to play Oak Hill Acadamy (the #1 high school basketball team in the nation for like the past 10 years.) These dudes were pressing and doing 360* windmills over our heads in the 4th quarter. I got dunked on by a guy doing a reverse alley-oop. We got beat like 120 to 60 something. I didn't cry about it though. I had the pleasure of playing with several players now in the NBA and premier college programs. Not many people can say that.

But if they tried to cut to the hole and the defender just had to swipe in a get the ball, no way should they be expected to pass up that imo.

I will admit that there is a thin line between kicking someone when they are down and not putting up an honest effort, which is just as embarassing as a butt beating, and it starts to gray pretty heavily at the not stealing the ball arguement.

Davis,

That is cool that you played Oak Hill.  That had to be a lot of fun.  My senior year I played against Leonard Davis, Cowboys offensive lineman, in the state tournament.  Talk about a big dude.

To your point.  Getting beat 120-60 is not near the same as 100-0.  In fact I'm very suprised ya'll managed 60.  You must of had a pretty good public school program.  If any team has 50 or more while the opponet has 0 you should not be pressing.  I really thing the issue is the 0 points.

You lost to Oak Hill by 60.  I don't think this would be a story if the final score was 100-40.

  • Super User

Oak Hill (about 2 hours away) once beat a local team 98-8.

I took the time to look it up. We actually lost 118-45 and 111-63.

My major point was that if running the score up wasn't enough, they were still teabagging us and jacking up 3's from half court.

I did not realize the losing team was "challenged."

But I have to disagree with Burley and a few others about not playing if you can't take losing.  Losing is part of playing and I agree, don't play if you can't lose w/out crying.

Look at MLB.  Team A (home) is up 15-0 in the bottom of the 8th.  They get a guy on 1st and he steals 2nd.  Then they try bunting him over to 3rd.

I guarantee you without a doubt the next pitch will be at the batters head.  There's just some things you don't do and rubbing it in to humiliate is one of them and that demands payback. You can still suck up the loss and be move on but NEVER get taken advantage of.

Just my 2/0.

I see where you're coming from Bassn, and this is what I was trying to say. As with a coach throwing at a batter in baseball, it seems the basketball coach made no attempt to change the game.

daviscw,

Exactly.

I just realized something. I dont know how we've missed it so far.

ITS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL!!!! We, as adult, basketball loving men should not concern ourselves with this abomination of the game.

I have to go watch my girlfriend's little sister all the time and it drives me crazy. How many freaking jump balls can you have a game?

If you had a daughter playing, you'd think differently.  I used to feel the same way about women's basketball.   :-X

  • Super User

I realize you are probably proud of your daughter.

But try to look at it objectively. Do you ever watch a freshman girls game and think to yourself "Now this is how the game is meant to be played" Or do you want to scream when the fourth over the back call in a row is called, or when the teams weakest player jacks 3's from beyond the NBA line?

I have known and dated girls that were amazing basketball players. But if I want to see a game where the athletes really impress me, girls volleyball and sometimes fast pitch are what I think of, not basketball.

Not meant to offend, tongue in cheek only.
