How to fish the Sweet Beaver

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I have a pack of the sweet beavers because i have heard some good things about them.  My question is, what is the best way to fish with them?  Is the rule of thumb to fish these anywhere you would fish a worm?

Should they be rigged weightless?  Should they be hopped slowly across the bottom of ledges?  Can they be effective in heavy cover like weeds and lily pads?

Are some water temps and conditions better than others to fish this in?

The Sweet Beaver can be fished all the ways you would normally fish a soft plastic. My two rigs are T-rigging and Shaky(using RI's Screwed Up jighead).  I sometimes rig them weightless when in clear shallow water, they have a great action while sinking. I even rig the Smallie Beaver like a soft jerkbait.  The cool thing about the Sweet Beaver and other beaver type baits, is you can experiment till you find what works for you.

These are some suggestions from RI.

This past spring, the Smallie Beaver has seen a lot of time on the water from me as a trailer for 1/4oz All-Terrain Tackle jigs.

I noticed you mentioned lilly pads.  Rig one of the Sweet beavers you have weightless or with a small bullet weight, burn it on top by the pads, and let it fall into the pockets.

Not too shabby texas rigged and pitched to brush either...

I love a Sweet Beaver as a trailer on a jig.

If you need to skip jigs under docks or over-hanging trees and stuff, a sweet beaver will really help the jig skip.
