Microsft Police virus

Featured Replies

Watch out this is a tough one my pc got nailed ( I'm currently using my work laptop from home).

We seemed to get it overnight but who knows. It is a rough one it is so prolific it locks you out of doing anything.

Bad part is I have e-mail addresses and pictures that are not backed up. The boss ( wife kind ) isn't going to like that part!

It might be a while before I get it solved.

sounds like they recommend MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware. Everyone should get that program and run it periodically. It's a great (and free) utility that will help in the event of infection.

I hadn't gotten around to researching it yet.

Thanks Glen for saving me some time and probably a better link than what I would have found. When I get the time I will give that a try. Maybe I will learn more about cleaning viruses in general.

Sometimes the malware that is on your computer will restrict the use of programs like malware bytes. I was working on an employees computer recently that wouldn't allow any malware removal tool to be run, additionally Malwarebytes wouldn't run in safe mode. I couldn't access task manager. Spybot would run in safe mode but would get rid of this particular malware. I ended up have to create a .bat file that ran as scheduled task at log on to delete the folder that the malware's .exe was in. This was one of the worst malwares I had come across.

Why go to that extent?  Why not just boot into DOS and delete the folder from there?  Just curious.

I haven't found a virus/malware yet that can't be extinguished by going into DOS and wiping it out from there.  They all rely on loading the OS.

Yeah that is possible but creating a simple delete .bat file and setting it to run as a scheduled task at log on is just as easy.

What type of e-mail was it delivered in?

Why is it called Police virus?

I got a bunch of e-mails at my work address today that I didn't recognize, I deleted them all without opening them, just curious if one of them was an e-mail with the virus.

I have no idea where it came from as it presently taken over my system.I shut off the computer till I get a chance to dig in to it. It seemed to appear out of nowhere over night. Perhaps it was a late night older kids activity? I run AVG free all the time and have it scan nightly  but every once in a while it "loses connectivity with its server" whatever that really means. I noticed it recently had again.

Well I was able to get it done. I used kind of some suggestions from the link that Glen provided as well as another link that I found.

I feel a lot better about being prepared for virus removal but I've  still got some work to do.

PS. After I was all done Microsoft said IE explorer 8 was out so I figured what the heck maybe time to do it. I downloaded it and my Internet wouldn't work. I tried un-installing it and IE 7 didn't work. I tried the usual cable modem and router re-boots and still no go. Finally I downloaded Firefox and it worked. I double checked and at that point IE began to work also. Almost like IE was worried about losing its place to Firefox lol.

All is well now
