Serious ? for the sports guys

Featured Replies

What's with the "we" when referring to a professional sports team? Example, I have a friend who is a die hard Red Sox fan. It's not uncommon for me to be subjected to language such as:

"We killed 'em yesterday!"

"We should trade so and so."

"We're gonna go all the way!"

I have to repeatedly ask him when he got drafted.

Catch my drift? Help me out here fellas. Some of you may know of my passion for Nitro powered Funny Cars, but when a driver I like wins I don't jump up and down and proclaim: "WE WON!!!"

I think it goes back to high school and college days, when teams represented their schools.  Rivalries are "us" vs. "them"; ergo the term "we".  In pro sports, it's cities they're representing instead of schools.

Funny car drivers, on the other hand, do not represent schools, towns, or cities.  There are hometown favorites, but that's not the same thing.

Hope that helps!

You should, If that's who you pull for. I pretty much keep a NCSU hat on my head most of the time. We win a few and we lose alot. ;D

For some reason it's very irritating. Kind of like that eyelash in your eyeball, and then it goes down under the eyelid.

What if the team you like is in another city? I know a girl who loves the Braves. Makes even less sense.

When was it a rule you had to like the team in the city you live in?

There are few NCSU fans around because they don't win as much as other universities In the state. That being said anyone who Is a State fan(myself Included) has earned the right to say "we".  ;)

I've wondered about that myself. I think using the word "we" when referring to a sports team as if you had something to do with the win or loss is a sign that you are too into it, especially a professional sports team. I can understand a high school or college team because you belong to that organization as a student.

My Spirit was with them while they were playing. I was rooting for them. Something about the team I relate to, don't know what but I like them . There for we are as one. If you are not a WE then you can't root for a team. Does that make sense?

Ain't that the truth!!!!

(Sorry had to say it, I'm a die hard Carolina fan as you can see.)

We buy tickets to go watch the games.

We buy $3 Pepsi's and $4 Hotdogs at the concession stands.

We buy hats, shirts, flags, and bumber-stickers with the team logo on it.

With those purchases we help fund the recruitment, coaching, training, building of playing and practice facilities, and all of the equipment it takes to play the game.

We invest in the game for the privilidge of saying "We won!"  And, we do it because we love it. :)

That's why! Excellent post preach!

Here's a question for Matt. Why do UPS drivers insist on leaving packages on the porch where anyone can just walk up and take them? Or get rained on?

We could just leave them tied to the mailbox like the Post Office.

I'm with you Matt.  I don't refer to my favorite team as "our" team or say "we won."

I like the Marlins but the night they won the World Series I didn't say "We won the series."  I said " The Marlins won!"

When I was kid in the 50's in Detroit we knew every player at every position on every team in the 4 major sports.  This was an age no Internet, no 24 hour cable news, no color tv, fewer teams and no AFC.

In those days professional sports was not the same " business " as it is today.  Players did not want jump from one team to another for the sake of a better contract, most had off season jobs.  Players wanted raise their families in the city where they played, become community leaders, and was not all that rare playing for one team their entire career.  Trades were a very big deal then and many of us heartbroken if a favorite players was traded.

Yes they were our teams then, the players represented us, look at some of the fans in the old newsreels, they had passion that fans don't have today.  Many of the players were idols then, Al Kaline in Detroit, Bart Starr in Green Bay, Gordie Howe, Willie Mays and even as late Michael Jordan.......I no longer feel the " rush" of the hometown athlete.

Some people just want to be connected to someone or something.

I've also noticed this sometimes which I think is funny.

When a team wins it's "WE WIN"

When a team loses it's " The (insert team name) lost"

The "WE" seems to apply more often on the winning side of things ;D
