0% interest credit cards

Featured Replies

Are there any hidden tricks or gimmicks on the 0% for a year credit cards? Has anyone used them to benefit from the 0% interest?

I got one through GE Money for part of my fiancee's ring.  No gimmicks.  I read the fine print and it was what it said it was.  No interest for 12 months.  After 12 months its 29.99% though!  :o

Dont plan on using it outside of the ring though

see what the interest rate is after the first year. generally they are slightly higher than normal.

Thats the trick.  I've seen some as high as 30% after the first 12 months.  If you pay off the bill at the end of each month, it's not much of a problem.  When you don't pay the bill is when you realize how much 30% interest really is.

How does the capital one card all the way at the bottom look? I read the fine print, and found nothing odd. I have a high interest loan currently I would like to pay off. I am confident I will be able to pay it before the interest would hit the card.

Any card I have owned in the last 40 years or more has been 0% if paid in full.

What a great deal, free use of money for a few weeks.  I would avoid not paying in full except in cases of absolute emergency when funds are tight, that does not mean new fishing equipment.

I am using that GE money thru Care Credit which is offered for medical bills.  I don't know if there is an advantage to paying a credit statement in full or using care Credit for 12 months free credit, then paying off the balance in full, either way I will not pay interest so I guess it's the same.  I'm having periodontal work done which takes in my case about 18 months, 5 surgeries and a few more to go.

The "catch" is that many people will use the card after the introductory period.  Most people say they will pay it off and cut it up after the 0% runs out but according to (someone I know who works for one of) the big card companies, few really do- so they more than make up for a couple people using it short term with a lot of people keeping it after.

The bottom line is it's a sucker card , for every one person who uses it the right way , there are nine people who let it use them.

Not sure what's changed with the new cc regs, but you can have:

1) balance transfer fees

2) if you use that card for any purchases, any payments are always applied to the balances with the lower rates first.  This means that you'll pay interest on the new purchases until you pay off the 0% amount.

3) the 12 month introductory period typically does not coincide with a due date, so if you don't pay attention you can get nailed with the full interest amount.  The min payment will say $0 one month and then the next month you'll get charge all of the accumulated interest.

If you do it right, it's free money.  If you mess it up it's very expensive money.
