Don't miss then.

You could use it as a club maybe...

It seems if you are far enough away to miss with a shotgun, you are probably not in enough danger to be defensive. I would worry more about being outnumbered. In which case a clip would be desirable. Anyways it's an awesome project Ken, you do great woodwork.

For defense I would and do choose a pistol. A shotgun looks good but is way to cumbersome and unwieldy to use for defense.

I would guess that if one perp gets blown away by that shotgun the others are not going to stand around waiting to see if its more than a single shot.

It's perfect for home defense though. Biggest plus, IMO, is that if you miss and your shot enters a wall the person sleeping on the other side of that wall is alot more likely to walk away.

A shotgun blast at self-defense range is also MUCH more powerful than a single projectile as well.  With multiple projectiles spreading out in a pattern, you are also more likely to hit your target in a stressful situation.  Many (if not most) may not be able to control a pistol in that situation.

Make sure you are using the right load for home defense, bubba.

As for lots of little projectiles flying around, I guess you need to decide what you want to do...stop the threat or tick them off so they leave.

Bottom line, people need to decide what they want to do and what is best for their home defense and then research appropriate ammo and become proficient with the firearm, including but not limited to an attack/defense plan, weapon proficiency, stress shooting, tactical movements, and escape planning.

A 2 year old could hit someone with buckshot, not a 9mm.

I would choose a shotgun anyday.

There is a magic sound that is made when you chamber a shell in a pump action shotgun. This is usually the end of the discussion for most intruders and you rarely have to fire a shot. If you do have to fire it is highly effective. JMHO

Pistola or scattergun?

Why?

Keep in mind, everyday citizen w/ minimal training.

As for pistol, I have switched away from a FMJ to rounds that "should" break up more should I miss and hit a wall.  I'm not sure If you can get your hands on them.

Buy a .40 and I can help you out.

A shotgun does give a little more margin of error, but this idea that you can just point in the general direction with a shot gun is dangerous. Most home invasion, self defense shooting happens up close. Load your shotgun with 00 buck shot and see what the patten is at 6-10'. I have an 18.5" open cylinder bbl on my Mossberg, and even at close range in a panic situation hitting a target is not sure thing.
