If you had to take the treble hooks off of a hard bait.. say a LC pointer or a lipless crank, what kind of hook would you replace it with and why?

well, i if i had to take them off and replace them, i'd replace them with black nickel VMC's, cuz they come standard on rapala and they are kick ***.

if i had to take them off and replace them with a single hook, well i wouldn't do that. :-/

The only lure type that I would consider a treble to single hook change would be a spoon.

ok guys - im trying to use them for species covered with a specific selective gear rules so single point hooks are a must - with that said..?

Im more interested in the style than the brand really - I wonder what would offer the best hookup ratio as a treble replacement on a hard bait like that.

How 'bout a simple solution: If you have two treble hooks,

remove one and clip off two of the barbs on the other or

just clip off all but a single barb on one hook without removing

anything.

I did think about that but I wonder if the "design" of the treble hook (gap size, bend, etc) lends itself to being (more)optimal with 3 points/barbs rather than one.  The single "hook" that it becomes after cutting off the other 2 points - how this would be comparable to other styles of hooks...

You can get Siwash (sp?) style hooks from BPS and/or Cabelas, several companies make them; i can never find them in stores around NOVA.  They work fine; my hook-up rate doesn't vary much, just make sure the ones you buy will fit onto the split rings currently on the bait, and size accordingly.

Your biggest challenge is the have a single hook attached to the lure with it in the proper orientation. You will probably have to use two split rings to get the hook point to be positioned either up or down.

edited: a hook suggestion would be a spinnerbait trailer hook in an appropriate size-it has a larger than normal eye
