Best rod for deep walleye?

Featured Replies

My dad has been fishing lake Erie recently and has been having some hook setting/sensitivity problems.  He is fishing in 40 foot deep water using casting harnesses.  The rod he currently uses is a 6' medium action bionic blade.  He just switched to 8lb. braided line to help with hook setting.  Does anyone have any experience fishing like this or does any one have any suggestions as to what rod, (action/length/make), would be best?

Thanks.

I moved this so you might get more response from the walley guys, not because it was in the wrong section, which it wasn't.

The guys on fishing shows all seem to be using a softer rod for trolling, Moderate or Slow Action. That gives the bait some give when the walley strike. I suspect "setting the hook" is pulling the bait out of the fishes mouth. I don't recall anyone setting the hook on TV, just maintaing pressure and reeling, hard!

I have never fished for walleye but I have fished sauger with vertical jigs in deep water.  My dad told me that the sauger would strike the jig twice and that I should set the hook on the second strike.  I was using a 7' M rod and thought i needed something siffer.  If I go sauger fishing again I will get a 7' MH or H rod.

I have heard that the G loomis MBR844 is a good walleye jigging rod, as well as a sweet a** bass rod.
