Trout / Rock Bass fishing in Great Smokey National Park

Featured Replies

Well, I'm going backpacking through Great Smoky National Park in mid-October.  We'll be backpacking through many streets and I'm electing to bring along a travel rod and reel.

There are several fishing restrictions within the park which limit me to:

1)  Only 1 hook

2)  No live bait, attractants, food, etc.

3)  Artificial baits / lures only

There are mostly rainbow trout, brown trout, and rock bass where I'll be in small streams / rivers - in very remote areas.

I won't be fly fishing.  I'll be fishing with lures, spinners or spoons with a single hook.

What would you recommend in terms of lures/spinners/spoons and hook setup?  What about reels?  The reel should be lightweight and tough.

I've never fished for Trout, but I'm guessing they use their sense of smell to find bait so Berkley Gulp baits might work. :-/

Unfortunately these don't conform to the park's regulations regarding attractants... :(

if you can find some, some company makes inline spinners with a single hook. try to use the smallest lures you can get by with, for the trout at least. rock bass are not very finicky, and you can catch them on just about anything if you can find em first. idk about travel rods, but i dont see what the big deal would be to use some sort of small, light action pole around 5 ft. good luck man! gotta love the smokies!

edit: nm on the pole, i seen you were backpacking.

I went to school at UT and fished the Smokies regularly for 8 years (I wasn't in school eight years, I just still lived there after graduation). I'd say get some bead-head wooly buggers, stonefly nymphs, and/or marabou jigs in 1/32 and lighter in black, brown, and olive/green. Past those, some Mepps inline spinners with the single siwash hook. Also you could get Roadrunners in the smallest size available. Toss either in the plunge pools and work slowly back and you'll be into some fish. Where exactly are you going?

This isn't finalized yet, but we were thinking of doing the Clingman's Dome to Fontana Dam route of the AT, or doing some trails within the Park just off the AT.  There's one trail in particular I'm interested in that follows a pretty decent stream - you've gotta hike 10 or so miles to get there.

PM me with the name if you want, I've done quite a few overnights in the area and I may be able to give you some spots to look for.
