Using bluegill for pike

Featured Replies

Has anyone out there caught bluegill and then re-hooked them for large pike on  a slip bobber rig? I was considering this as well as the frozen smelt method. I'm not able to get large minnows near where I live. It just seemed like a decent idea but any suggestions/criticism would be appreciated.

Check your state regulations.  I am not sure, but I believe it may be illegal in MN and may be in other states as well.

Like jivey said, check to make sure it is legal to do first.

I've never done it but I've seen my Dad use bluegill and sunnies in PA for muskies.

A friend of mine used to hook small bluegill on a worm than use the bluegill for pike.  Worked quite well.  You can use a bobber or try to weight it down with a weight (depending on size).   He would occassionally get bass fry as well on the worm and they'd work for pike too.

Yes.  Take a bluegill and hook a treble through it's back and tie on a giant bobber a few feet up and flop it out in the water and you're good to go.

I used to use Yellow Perch for Pike bait. It worked great, I've never tried Bluegil.

BTW, it's legal here in Michigan.
