There goes my summer fishing....

Glad I am headed to Kentucky in a few.  I need to get out of here!  This fall they pulled the plug on my flowage, I could walk accross without getting my shoes wet, and we all the sudden have a huge fish kill.  No oxygen they say.  Never would have guessed that.

This is sad, once again the Wisconsin DNR proves that is is worthless.

Are you fishing the PMTT?

Nah, I fish 'em but have never done any tournament fishing. Have you fished Wisconsin much?  We definately have the water for musky.  I don't know exactly when, but probably in the late fall I will take a long weekend and get over to the Chippewa Flowage and see if I can pull out one of them monsters over there. Other than that, I will hit my local waters around central Wisconsin thru the summer.  Mostly I will wait for the late fall musky fishing.  This EauPleine thing really has me jerked though. Completely foreseeable, but once again, money outweighs conservation and common sense.

I have never fished for muskies in Wisconsin before, I may make it there this summer though and hopefully get Scott Kieper for a day. Then it's off to Minnesota for a day with Mike Hulbert.  This is going to happen on my college visits.

Good Luck

Why do they draw the reservoir down at all?

We are part of a 4 or 5 reservoir system that is privately held by the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Co.  And they basically can take the water anytime they wish.  This water can, at any time, be relocated to another system which may want/need more water for sports events such as kayak racing.  They will also take it further down the Wisconsin River the the famous Wisconsin Dells Theme Park.  Ya know all the vacationers need that water for the water rides.  They do this knowing full well that the unchecked agricultural runoff is eating up the oxygen supplies.

What I don't understand is how even though the flowages are privately held, the DNR seems to be helpless in correcting any of this.  I buy a fishing license, am conservation minded, into C/R, obey limits, etc.  And then this is allowed to happen with no regard for the fish.  It all seems pointless to me now.  Why even bother when industry and the DNR can't/won't acknowledge the problem until the damage is done.  The real kick in the kahunas is that this is an annual fight.  It is not as if this was unforseen or unexpected.

Sorry Francho, didn't mean to rant, it's just very upsetting.

This is what I was thinking as well.

No need to apologize for the rant, I sympathize.  What is irritating is, that these projects are initially pitched with fishing, and the $$$ that comes along with it, as "pro."  As soon as things are going, they only see the revenue from usage fees from other events, not the stimulus that the convenience stores, tackle stores, gas sales, etc.

Anyway, I'm about to get political, so I'll stop.  Suffice it to say, "green" gets a lot of lip service, but when it comes to resource management, we are sometimes brown.

Being from and living in WI, this really really really upsets me.  Seems as though the WIDNR is always doing the same old garbage year after year.

You can't fight dogs but it is perfectly legal to kill thousands of fish?   :'(

Wow..those are some seriously sad pictures. With the size of the fish killed, it will take years for that to recover if at all.

These folks managing this system are flat out incompetent. The articles I read about it, really make it sound much smaller a kill than that.

I am sorry to see that. If that happened to Wylie, I think I would go postal.

Had it not been for the local media, I believe it may have gone thru under the radar, it definately was not on the PR list for the water rights holders.  There's debate over the actual numbers and the time frame for recovery, but to me its the principal.

Wow man. That's crazy. Hope you can do some fishing while you are in KY.

Yup, had a blast.  Only one or two that held any weight, but lots of little ones caught.

My pier is being closed until dec 2010, in Florida time that means dec 2011. Putting in a new sand transfer station, resurfacing and raising it 2', no one is happy about that.

What annoys me is that the county is complaining about not having enough money for education and services such as police, fire and ems. They could have slated the work to be done in more prosperous times.
