hello. there are some large carp in a creek that runs through my backyard. i was wondering what you guys use to hook these guys.

i cant bring myself snag them. unless i was going to eat them, then id have no problem.

about the corn, can i just thread a few kernels from the can on a hook or do i need it raw from the cobb?

I have great success with whole kernel corn out of the can, i use small octopus hooks, except i pinch the barbs down with a pair of pliers so i don't harm the fish.

try ficus berries. during the summer here those trees berry up and start dropping into the water and the carp are all over them as soon as they hit. it is a fun bite when nothin else is.

You can make your own carp bait quite easily. Get a box of Kellogg Bran Flakes. Crush them fine using a rolling pin and put into a large freezer type plastic bag. Add just enough strawberry soda to get the mixture tacky. Take a big ball of it with you in a sealed plastic bag.

When you are ready to fish, throw out several 1" balls of this mixture, a cast distance from where you want to be. Sit down and relax for about a 1/2 hour. Then form a ball around a small, size #6 treble hook and rig on an egg sinker, slip rig (1/4 oz. is fine). Cast to where you tossed the freebies and watch your line. Sooner or later they will take.

Don't forget, if you get hungry, this mixture makes a fine snack as well! 

Corn works great. Chicken livers are also good for carp and catfish. Carp are attracted at sweet stuff also. I coat my flies in vanilla when I fly fish for carp.

Carp fishermen use what they call "boilies". They are made from dough that is flavored (strawberry,etc), rolled into balls, and then boiled. (hence the name) The boiling gives them a hard coating. They thread the boilies on to what is called a "hair rig". There are carp sites you can go to that shows all the info needed.

Theres lots of options. But the quickest easiest thing is a can of corn. Throw out some chum first. If you really want to be dirty(and a little cheap )chum the area often,even if your not fishing there. The carp will always be there waiting for a handout.Another really cheap thing to do is take a can of cream corn,poke it full of holes,tie to a rope and toss it out there.Then proceed to fish around it.

This thread makes me want to go carp fishing real bad.

The only success I have had with carp have been with vegetables.  I got a hold of an absolute monster years ago while using zucchini.  Corn works well too. 

Also try the k-1 flavored corn and boilies, they also make pre-made rigs, and beginner kits.
