Pike vs. Power Pro???

Featured Replies

I just started using Power Pro line and was just wondering if it will stand up to the teeth of a Northern Pike? Do I still need to use a leader?

Thanks.

Same as any other line - depends on the bait, and how deeply they take it.  If you value your baits, use a 50-100# fluoro leader, or some kind of steel.  The best for metal leaders I've found is titanium.  Pricey, but lasts a long time, and doesn't kink.  Another good product is Cortland Toothy Critter.  Tieable and strong, great for Texas rigging baits.

I would throw a flouro leader on there. I have had pickerel bite through braid so I'm sure a Pike could snap right through it no problem.

YES.

Braid or otherwise, I would not trust any filament to stand up to a pike's teeth.

I highly recommend a metal leader.

Fluorocarbon is the leader of choice for guys "in the know" around here.  They use it for Musky on St. Clair.  Use to be that everyone used metal, not anymore.  I don't think it makes a difference really, but some guys do.  I do agree, if you are using metal, use titanium.  Another benefit is that they will not rust.

X muskie and pike fisherman, now a barracuda angler, I get cut off more times than I can remember using mono or fluro, but still use it at times ( get more strikes).  I make my leaders out of  30# surlon or piano wire.  I would love to try 1 of my cuda tubes on muskie sometime, bet they would work well.

Yes you still need a leader.

They do more than just prevent bite offs. Braided line is more flexible than mono and this is a problem for some lures during the cast and also on the retrieve. The flex in the line allows it to foul the lure.

The short length of leader helps this problem.

I use 60 lb fluorocarbon. At this strength I can still tie the knots by hand and it has never failed me. Not even on Lake of the Woods in Canada fishing for a week straight with the same leaders.
