Elite's WHACKIN' FISH on Guntersville this weekend

Recommended Posts

I dont know if any of you are following the Guntersville Elite this weekend but the guys are absolutely wearin' em out!

Going into the final day Aaron Martens is leading with 87+ and everyone in the top 12 has a chance to break the 100# mark.

There's been plenty of 27, 28 and 29# bags and some 30# bags have gone across the stage as well. Some of the guys are reporting catching as many as 140 fish per day.

KVD ended up 20th.

Scott, I've been following it since day 1.  They are absolutely smackin them.  Hoping my man Aaron can stay consistent....wonder if him and Byron are sharing a spot  ;D

I bet they are catching fish off beds.

There may be a few guys catching late spawners but the majority of the guys are catching them on traps and cranks. I watched the bass cast thing on ESPN Outdoors for a while yesterday and Martens and McClelland both were throwing lipless baits as far as they could throw 'em. Then Ike said in an interview that he was fishing spots where the fish were stacking up before heading deep for summer.

Yep, the reaction bait is king on Guntersville this time of year.  The previous Elite tournaments on the lake have shown that.

Its not just the elites that are whcking them on Guntersville. The fishing right now is unreal. I caught over 50 yesterday morning and another 60 yesterday afternoon. And alot of these are not small fish. Yesterday morning we had over 20 lbs by 8 am. We started looking around for a tournament to compete in. Its been like this for a couple of weeks now.

The best part is that they are starting to destroy top water baits, most of the fish we caught yesterday evening were on top water baits.

Talking to some of the elites in and around Guntersville over the past few days, they all are amazed at the fishing on Guntersville right now. The combination of numbers and size is just unbelievable.

I rode with three different Elite at G'ville this week during the tourney, and I can tell you that they absolutely SLAYED them.  Culling 5 pound fish left and right. It was absolutely sick.

That is an amazing lake to sustain that kind of LMB population with the amount of pressure the lake gets.

Yeah, think about it.  You're Greg Hackney and you have over 72 lbs after three days (averaging 24 lbs a day) and you don't make the final cut to twelve anglers.  Amazing!

There are crazy numbers of big bass in that lake.

On Day One 1 rode with Morizo Shimizu, on Day 2 I rode with Aaron Martens, and Day Three I rode with Mark Burgess.  All three were class-act guys.....very personable and happy to show/explain/teach.

I can't say enough good things about them.

Also, the B.A.S.S staff and the pros both love the Marshal program, and go out of their way to make sure you have a good time. I guess I'd better keep that quiet so I have a good chance of getting into more events next year  ;D

It was one of the coolest things I've ever done.  I'm signed up for Kentucky Lake next month, and I'll definitely be signing up for more next season.

That's really cool that you got a day on the water with the eventual winner.

I'm almost positive that Senko77 is jealous. ;D

When we were there, last year, this is the kind of week I was expecting.

Once again, timing is everything!

8-)

You lucky S.O.B.!!! I would kill to have a day of fishing with Martens.

What did he throw? What was it like sitting in the boat with the most patient angler on the Elite Series?

HaHa, it was way cool, Senko77.

Aaron Martens is a fantastic guy to spend 10 hours with.

He likes to talk, likes to tell you what he's noticing on the water, likes to have fun catching fish. I learned so much from him, just by watching him and listening to what he was saying- I didn't have to ask a lot of questions.

I'll tell you this- the guy was hitting them HARD. You should have seen the skin on his hands and thumbs- they were so shredded from handling bass between practice and the tourney that he was uncomfortable.

Add to that, he was so completely personable that he took away my jitters about being amongst the pros, and I was able to have a good time while we joked about ( or I joked about) culling fish as big as he was culling. Super guy.

He's a class act all the way.

The only problem I had was when he asked me to estimate the weight of a few fish he landed- he sort of said, that when you boat so many fish of this size, you can't tell their weight any more. I kind of had to confess that the BASS Trak phone did not have a button for 'donkey' size, as he liked to call them, and I'd never caught one that big. :-/

Totally awesome!

Send me a PM and I'll try to give you more if you want. There is a write up on Bassmaster.com about the LC DD 2.5

Peace
