I decided to fish for bass today with an ultralight set up and 4 LB test. I cannot seem to catch a big fish to save my life recently so I decided I would try for some normal size bass with ultralight gear instead. Went to a local private pond that is surrounded with reeds and brush and started tossing a 6 inch weightless purple roboworm. I ended up catching 5 bass within a little under two hours. The biggest one was an ounce shy of two lbs but he felt like a monster on the ultralight rod with 4 LB test. Here is a pic of that fish...

Do any of you guys ever fish for bass with ultralight gear? I think you should try it if you have not. It is great fun and makes catching smaller fish much more enjoyable.....

Fishing with an ultralight is a blast-whether it be for bass or bluegill or whatever!!!  Probably not the best choice for musky, however.

I love it! My normal tackel is a medium light action rod and 6 pound test. Its a blast

I posted a few on here I caught with my new ultralite and #4 mono.  My favorite lure so far is the beetlespin.  I've been killing them on it.  My goal this year is to get one over 5 pounds on #4 mono.

Went out fishing with the ultralight and 4LB test again thismorning. The bite was much tougher. A storm moved through the San Diego area last night and today was very cold and windy. temperature in the 50s and very strong winds. I went out for about 2 hours and only had three bites. I was able to hook up and land all of them on my ultralight though. Biggest fish was also a pretty good size one. 2 LBS 5 OZ. I caught all three fish with a weightless 6 inch purple roboworm again...

Nice 5lb.  When I was a kid I used to use my UL setup and fish the small twin tailed beetle spin bodies weightless.  I could get it walk under the water.  Bass and big redear used to chew it up

Four (4) pound test line; small jig head with small grub or a Rooster Tail; small spinning reel; light weight rod; and hold on.

You can catch everything with this rig.

It is deadly at the historic James River Pony Pasture for smallies, largemouths and bluegills.

It is deadly on a pond.

It is deadly on a river.

Never tried it on a lake due to the size and species of fish but I bet you could have some fun with it until the line breaks or is cut-off.

Ultra-light fishing is a lot of fun.

great job. ul bass are awesome. my best ul outing was at a farm pond, the top of the pond was covered in duckweed. i took an ultralight with 6lb test and was casting out a weightless 7" ribbon tail worm and crawling it across the top of the duckweed. little dinky bass would just expolde on it. ended up catching 18 bass that day, on that setup, biggest bass was about 16".

with the ul rod, the 6lb test, the bass, and they few pounds of duckweed they were haulin', it all added up to an excellent fight.

good job fpb, and cool post.  yeah, i really got into the ul stuff last year and i had a blast.  those long drag pullin' runs are really fun and using ul really improves your fish fightin' skills.  my best day on ul tackle was when i caught both of these in the same day.  6 lb. test and 5 ft. ul spinning.  i don't think i'll ever forget that day.  pure adrenaline baby!  i didn't think i'd ever get the catfish in.  came very close to spooling me on the first run.  thanks again for the cool post.  more people need to know about how much fun the ul stuff is.

wow paul those must have been a very good fight! i love UL fishing. i need to do it more this year. last time we were at bps, my dad bought his own UL rod/reel so we no longer have to share mine  ;D only thing is its hard to get a solid hookset with a t-rig when you use UL (unless you add a trebel, but then you are sacrficing snaglessness)

Don't fish ul often enough, I bet it would make those days you catch nothing but dinks a lot more fun. Great fish guys!

about 13 pounds if i remember right.
