great topwater pond action

Featured Replies

so i recently went on a trip to a fair sized farm pond(never fished it before) with some friends, and boy it turned out great. we got here at about 3 or so, but had to go back about 5:30. anyways, this is what i managed to whip up:

first fish,

second

both were caught at around 4:30, on the rage tail shad, within 20 feet of each other, in about 4 casts altogether! they werent really close to any structure, just out is a little deeper water from the shore.  its about 90 degrees out mind you!

for the first hour or so, i tossed around a 5" trick stick close to shorline structure, but no luck. clouds started to roll in, and blocked out the sun for maybe 5 or 10 minute intervals. i decided to tie on a topwater of some sort, and tried the rage tail for old times sake.(never had much luck on it before) funny thing is, i only caught fish on it when the clouds blocked the sun. go figures. got lots of hits and fallowers, but just failed to hook anything else.

pretty funny story, after i caught the first one, they said, "now, bring in a 5 lber"... lol, tried for a seven , but no go.

they aren't very big fish. they are good fish but they arent huge. they are probably 2lbs or a little under. they are strong but they are also short.

i now know for a fact that the second one was 20 inches. i marked how long he was on my pole and i just measured it. think what you like ::)

I'd say 2- 2.5 lbs

That seems about right.

im might be heading back out there this afternoon. any suggestions what to use besides topwater? id like to use a jig, but only in heavy cover... would a jig work in more open water? like i said, ive used a trick stick, but to no avail. these fish seem to be more in open water than anyhing. looking for a more finnese bait, but one that could cover a lot of water.

A hard jerkbait like a Luckycraft Pointer has always been my go-to pond lure. It will help you locate the fish quicker, which shouldn't be too long because it is a small pond.

Way to go Kybasser, some nice looking fish!
