Is there a 'standard' size utility tackle box that is most commonly used, and that modern bass boat storage areas are built to accept?

Do most folks use 1 basic size of the Plano boxes, for example?

I ask because this winter, I am going to transition the contents of my 'traditional' tacle boxes over to the utility boxes.  I'll also be trading up to a newer boat in the next year or so, so I'd like the boxes that I buy to fit the storage area systems that are built into many of the more modern boats.

Plano 3700 in all it 's variants.

There are a number of "standard" sizes, with the 3600 and 3700 probably the most popular.

The one that you should use is the one that matches your needs. My bag can carry six 3600s and I never have to bring more than five. Both of my partners have suitcase-sized bags that can hold a load of 3700s.

If you're going to do most of your fishing from your new boat, I'd probably use the 3700s. While I don't know a lot about bass boats, I'm sure their storage area can accommodate a generous supply of the larger size.

I dont know what the standard size is, but I started off with a small 2 shelf plano box when I began fishing as a teen. Over the 30 years I have collected so much tackle that my tackle boxes are now actually suit case size. I have 2 of them full of stuff. If I bring both fishing with me, there is no floor space in the boat and I lose 3 MPH on the top end!

I think I will get a new Plano and just put into it what I actually use!

spend the extra money on the z-rust version.  I have 3 in my tackle bag and love them.

As I aged, I learned that I don't have to be a traveling tackle shop. Both my partners aren't comfortable unless they bring along a load of stuff, and I say, that's fine, to each his own.

I assume  you're referring to plastic organizer boxes, not to toolboxes that have built-in trays. The terminology isn't clear when doing searches. And I assume you want dimensions.

 

The standard sizes seem to be set by Plano -- whose website has very little besides pictures. Some retailers' product descriptions have dimensions.

• 3400 - 8.25" x 4.25" 1.38"
• 3500 - 9.13" x 5" x 1.25" 
• 3600 - 10.75" x 7.25" x 1.75"
• 3700 - 14" x 9.13" x 2"

If you get a backpack or bag designed for tackleboxes, it will probably be sized for the 3600. Bass boat storage compartments might be different. You need to do some pre-shopping.

 

There are a lot of variations, depending on latches, handles, and depth. For example, I think Plano's Edge series is thinner. And those the only sizes. You might be better off waiting until you get your boat, measuring the compartments, and then going to WalMart to see what fits.
