Skeeter6598
I learned for the first time that you don't tell a 3 year old that you'll take them fishing the next morning and expect to do some other thing first. I told my niece that I'd take her fishing Saturday. I was planning on waking up and going to town to pay a couple of bills and clean my truck and then take her fishing that afternoon. Well there was this little girl sitting on my chest, poking me in the head at 10 til 7 Saturday morning wondering why I wasn't out of bed yet to take her fishing! LOL! :'( Well so much for the other stuff. I got up and took her to our pond and she had a blast. This was only her second fishing trip and the first where she actually fished. On her little pole she caught 4 palm sized bluegills and also 2 bass about a pound a piece. She squealed like something had a hold of her leg, when she hooked those bass. Even though I didn't want to get out of bed early I did and glad that we went. Was supposed to go out bass fishing on the lake that morning but my buddy's low unit went out on his boat Friday so we didn't go.

Shad_Master
I have been taking my 13 year old fishing since he was 4. One of the best trips we ever had was one where my reel fell apart on my second cast. I spent the rest of the day helping him to catch fish and we both had a blast. I once heard Hank Parker talking about taking little kids fishing and his advice was to leave your tackle at home and just let them have fun. It sure worked for me. Now 9 years later, my guy is fishing some club tournaments with me and still enjoys it.
Cephkiller
I took my 8 yr old to a power plant lake last Sunday. I bet I cast 400-450 times and threw everything I had at them without even a bite. When we had about 30 minutes to go, he finally decided to throw a homemade crankbait I carved out of a piece of 2x4. He "custom" painted it with flourescent polka dots. He only cast 10-15 times all day. Well, he caught one. It only went about 2lbs, but it was a fish. The guard at the check out gate said it was only the 5th bass caught that day out of approximately 40-50 boats. He really let me have it about that ;D I would probably have been mad if it hadn't been my boy. No, I definitely would have been mad ;D
hookem19
take your kids fishing, even if you are tired or hungover (haha) or whatever it might be, make time because my dad and i have developed a relationship that would not have been possible had he not taken me hunting and fishing. being with "just the boys" out in the country or out on the water is what we need these days in place of the computer games and video games and tv. woodghost
I started taking my 4 year year old son Jack fishing last spring. He is a hyperactive little guy but he is very grounded while he watches a bobber. I took him ice fishing a couple of times this winter and he loved it. I am waiting for some warmer weather here in Iowa before I take him this spring. I never try and fish when he is with me. It's all about him - great Father - Son time. Skeeter6598
Yeah it was a great outting for us. She had a ball and I laughed so hard my side hurt watching her. Since Saturday she has bugged me about taking her again. If the weather is nice the weekend will probably do it again!!! Even though I don't have any kids of my own it's sure fun taking her along! dhaynes
My oldest son just turned 5. This will be his 3rd year to go out with me. When I go I do not fish when he is fishing. When he gets bored and starts petting the minnows I might make a cast or two. But I figuare when I take him it is for him. I get my fishing in. I want him to fish buddy tournaments with me when he gets old enough so I make sure that I do not make it miserable for him. When he is ready to go, we go. He loves driving the boat( in my lap of course). Last year we when out a few times. He would say faster dad. Well we would get to a spot and fish for a few minutes and he would say " dad this isn't the best spot we need to move. He realy likes the boat ride. His quote is " going fast is kinda scary but I like it." My daughter Just turned 3 so I will get to take her this year. My youngest turned 1 so It will be a wile for him. Hopfully all my kids will love to fish with dad. Mabey one of them will go pro. Kids are the future of our sport. Dave
walkranger
I love to hear about all the kid-dad fishing trips. I have a son that recently turned 13. I have been taking him fishing for a number of years. He is a natural. I think this is a great way to bond with the kiddos. Please, take your kid fishing. clooney
If you don't have a kid to take fishing, sometimes your fishing spot is a good place to meet a kid. I was at a local state park pond last summer when a kid, about 7 or 8 yrs old, was having trouble with his hook and bobber up in a tree.(poor little guy) :-[ Anyway, I helped him re-tie his hook and bobber and got him baited back up. He started fishing next to me. We got to talkin'. He was at the park with his stepmom and stepsister who were over at the playground while he was at the pond fishing by himself. He said he had just moved to our state with his dad and stepfamily. His birth mom had died recently of a heart attack. His dad was at work that Saturday afternoon, so I tried to stick around and fish with him that day until his stepmom and sister were ready for him to leave. I hope to see him out there again this summer!

A couple years ago when i was just geting into bass fishing, i was trying to rig up a plastic worm at the waters edge... then this ole guy comes up to me and give a worm and weight out of his box and teachs me how to rig up a plastic worm and give me a bullet weight. I thought it was nice and now i do the same for some of the younger kids.
basspro05
I am 18 and have been bass fishing since I was 3 0r 4, I just recently bought a bass boat, and a friend of mine asked if he could go with me someday, cause he hadnt been fishing for like ten years. I took him out the past two days, and he has had a blast. We haven't caught a lot of fish, but he still doesn't want to leave the lake, he is even thinking about being my partner for some local tournaments. squid
Some of you need to start a Youth Fishing Program in your areas. Tritonman and I run a Non-Profit Youth Program, and I don't know who has more fun...ME or the Kids....ME of course....lol ;D The reason I say ME, is cause I have no kids...so I am like an extra uncle for them all...lol
tritonman
I have 4 kids, they all fish, they all enjoy it, though the youngest (9) gets bored the earliest. I don't pressure them into staying out all day. I want them to grow up enjoying the sport. Squid and I run a youth program for fishing, these programs are only 3 hours long. We provide the kids with live bait, and let them have fun. It is such a blast to watch the looks on a young childs face when they catch a big fish. Congrads to all who takes a child out fishing

Skeeter6598
I've got a 3yo boy and I love to take him fishing. But I never tell him I am going to take him till just before we go. That way if something comes up he won't be let down. That's what I learned. I told her a day early and it cancelled all of my plans for the next morning. I've learned now that I'm not saying a word until I'm loading the pick-up!
