Best post spawn strategies?

Featured Replies

I'm fishing a large ,shallow flat (2-5ft.).It is littered with stumps and is full of submerged grass that is on the surface in the shalloest areas. What are some different baits, colors, techniques, and strategies for catching post spawn bass? The fish are there and I'm catching my share on Rogues,Rapalas, and spinnerbaits.I think I could do more with some different points of view.

When those fish come off those beds and are really active I like throwing a buzzbait and flukes. Just something I like to do. Now as the water gets hotter I go deeper cause that's where the big girls usually go!

I'll second the flukes right now. I had a little trouble with getting my strikes hooked up, but I caught a ton of bass in a couple of hours last Saturday on a small pond. I only fished a white Slug-Go, nothing else that morning.

???

I mostly throw Trick Worms regardless of the season. But there are probably a bunch of post spawn strategies that I'm missing.  :-/

Anyone else have some post spawn tricks?

Based on your comments of fishing the flats, i would seek out the nearest drop-off and use a Texas rig, Carolina rig, jigs and slow roll spinnerbaits (until one is successful) and slowly let this fall when you feel the drop-off.  If you don't find a drop-off look for a submerged hump closest to the flats and fish the deep side of the hump.  Remember, the largest girls spawn first, so they are stressed for 1-3 weeks afterwards and are seeking solitude.  So they are not as likely to chase faster moving forage yet.  Try the crawdad colors.

Just my opinion, tear it up fella's

I would also go with the drop off technique, I will usually also swim a jig inbetween stumps and also along weedlines.

Shade and confort is what the big females seek after spawning. Remember that they usually suspend after the spawn. Senkos and crankbiats will get them. Topwater extremely good to find what they are realating to. It get's them ticked off and get's a reaction strike.

Best post spawn bait for me is the Fluke the white ice color caught 22 bass in 4 hrs last year and went through 2 and a half packs of these platics baits ....man that was fun :D

Weightless, always.

when u fish flukes post spawn do u fish them weightless or with weight?

Yup with a swivil then your line followed by your hook.

RATTLETRAP the grass and bounce shallow crankbaits off the stumps. Topwater in the morning either a buzzbait or a walking bait this could be a good locator also and back it up with a drop bait like a jig or tube. A fluke would work great in the afternoon or a drop bait. Use the stumps as targets even if you don't see bass and pitch a tube to them. Alot of times bass will be there even if you don't see them buried up in the grass under or next to the stump.

I had great success with tubes and fat ikas.  they killed.  buzzbaits n etc the bass may have an option.

tubes/ikas, etc.  u lay it in the bed, the bass will be more reluctant to get it off his/her eggs.

makes sense.  although, I've found that fishing doesn't make much sense.  so try it, may or may not work.   :)
