Prop Baits

Featured Replies

I have an old "Devil Horse" buried somewhere in my tackle bag, but haven't thrown it in several years - just wondering what prop baits are out on the market now that have made an impression on you. Thinking about getting back into these this next season. Thanks for your suggestions.

Deps Buzzjet was a great bait for me this past year. It's a little on the heavy side due to the size of the bait, but when they hit it, I promise you will know.

If the larger size does not fit what you are looking for they make a smaller one also. Deps Buzzjet

You can also bring some life back to those old Devil Horses' by installing these on both ends. I put these on all my old Devil Horses' and they work great. Real attention-getters on a calm evening.

I don't even fish prop baits and don't normally pay 25$ for one lure but these look unbelievable.  If I were you I would give these a try.

The Buzzjet Jr. became my new favorite lure this past fall. It's an awesome bait.

WoodChopper, by Lhur Jensen, less than 10 bucks and deadly! Silver/black

Wood Choppers, Heddon Dying Flutter, Devil Horse and a few others I can't remember have all worked well for me.

Partial to a Devil's Horse myself. I have an older lure that used to be made by Luhr Jensen, Dalton Special. It is a walk the dog type bait with a single prop at the rear. Found out that the fellow that sold the rights to LJ is making them again under the name Skinny Water Sam. I had quit using the original for fear of losing it. I'll definitely be using the new one this year :)...

Devil's Horse, Heddon Torpedoes, and Deps Buzzjet Jr..

This isn't exactly answering your question but I wanted to write this:  The devils horse is a really good bait but be aware that with super limp braided line, 7 times out of ten the line will wrap around the front prop-messing up the action.  One evening when the bite was really hot, I'd lent my other go-to bait to my brother and I was left with a devils horse.  The aforementioned problem gave me fits.

Take the front prop off. It catches a hell of a lot more fish that way anyhow 8-)

(Sound of me smacking myself in the forehead). Where were you when I need you?!!! Geesh! ;D

No but seriously, the D-Horse flat out catches fish. I too had the problem with braid, impossible.

Remove front prop,replace screw.

To make the bait sit a bit lower in the water.(1 of 3)

a)replace the rear hook with a slightly larger one

b)use a heavier gauge hook

c)apply a small piece of a suspend strip to the rear

Turn rear screw slightly, maybe one turn,so that the prop can spin super free. Most of the time it is too snug out of the package.

Take pliers and slightly twist the prop like a fan blade. If done correctly you should be able to hold the lure up vertically and gently blow the prop from front to back and make it spin effortlessly. When in the water you should hear a small "bloop" when you twitch it and it should sound like a tiny buzzbait when straight retrieved.

It becomes more of a finesse prop. Not loud and boisterous like these baits are generally known for.Best when fished in calm conditions. Gentle downward twitches just like working a floating Rapala.Sometimes rips work.Always pause. In my experience the strike ususally aren't violent. The water just opens up like a black hole and the lure dissapears. :)

Some of the baits I bought I had more trouble "tweaking" Reason why? I do not know, but sometimes you got to play with it a little bit until it is right.

You can eliminate this problem by getting some small coffee stirrers and cutting about an inch off, running your braid through the stirrer, then tying on as usual.  No more snagged lines on the front prop. :)

Funny no one mentioned the Lucky Craft Splash Tail, I bought this bait awhile ago, and have yet to fish the thing. I don't know why, it just looks funny to me, and I don't have the confidence to throw it, im going to try and raise the confidence this year and fish the thing.

I don't know why I bought it either, I think at the time I was having great luck with the heddon torpedo, and was on the whole "prop bait craze".

i hate to even mention it, but the river 2 sea tango prop has been the best topwater bait ive used in the last 4-5 years. I am very partial however to the old school Nip-it-idee(sp?)

NICE! I'll do that to my cordell crazy shad.

Good idea.  I'll try it!  Thanks!  Just got to remember to put some in my box.

I like skitter props. Plus they are relatively cheap.

x2 that is my favorite prop bait. torpedos are also good baits. i have the depps and the lucky craft prop, but i haven't caught enough fish to switch from the skitter.

that is a great idea with the coffee stirrer. definitely gonna give it a go.

I've been using the Bagley's Spin Tail Bang-O-Lure for years with much success. Tennessee Shad is my best producer.  They now have a Twin Spin Bang-O-Lure I anxious to try.  Not too bad on the price even.
