jig/worm

Featured Replies

hi ima a young angler and im just been wondering what do bass think a 10 inch worm and a jig imitates or what does it look liketo them i was thinking about combineding to to so if u have any tips ot ideas please share with me and whats the smallest jig i can get away with  and put the worm on it  i omly have spinning reels with 12 pound test line

if it's made outta plastic, i've put it on a ballhead jig...one of the best producers made.

that said, it ain't for all plastics...especially the thicker fat ika, sweet beaver deal..have used a ballhead with a zoom ole monster but, will be the first to tell you that you'll get better hook-ups using the traditional bullet weight/worm hook set-up.

you can get pretty small with spinning...one of my better days with spinning have come on an 1/8 oz. ballhead w/3" or even 2" grub.

jig can imitate crawfish and bait fish. depends on how you work it. not sure what a worm imitates. i think the bass just see it as easy prey.

jig and worm works but id only use it when the jig/craw trailer bite stops.

you can use any weight for the jig, as a matter of fact i recommend small bitsy bug jigs to get started. i prefer 1/4 oz with a tiny zoom chunk trailer or 3" craw trailer like the yum craw papi or netbait paca craw. i think a small jig with a small profile will catch more fish and help you build confidence using them.

Bass are going to think that 10" worm will be a tasty treat.  I use 8" worms on #4 mono but it's not always easy.

First of all, make sure your drag is in top working order.  Don't over tighten it or you will pop your line.

Use a thin hook and 1/8 ounce sinker.

Learn to hold your spool with your hand when the fish is stripping of line  to prevent him from taking you into danger areas.  Try and keep him in open water.  Be careful holding the spool though, it's easy to pop your line.  You'll have to get the feeling for it through experience.

You should be able to handle any fish/size on light tackle in open water.

12 pound is ok for using worms and so are spinning outfits.  The more experienced you get, you will learn your equipments limitations.

I recommend using 8 pound mono if your spinning rod is M/L. 10 pound mono for Medium  and 12-14 mono for Heavy spinners.

I would switch to braid if using heavier than 14 mono since braid is thinner.  Or learn how to use a baitcaster.

You don't need a heavy weight jig or sinker for success.  If I was dead set on using a 10 inch worm on a jig head with your outfit,  then I would probably use a 1/8 ounce jig head up to 3/16.

I would fish it T-Rigged on 12-14 lb. flouro line and a 6'6" or 7'

Medium rod. Don't know what setup you are using but years ago a 6' worm on a plain mushroom jighead was THE BAIT for fishing deep weedlines. You will catch plenty of average size fish with the 10"er but can expect a bite or two from a monster sooner or later. You will need to become familiar with playing a large fish on lighter tackle. Keep tip down to keep it from jumping and try to keep it away from the boat for as long as possible to wear it down. Don't pretend your KVD and crank like heck and hoist it over the side. That's a recipe for disaster!

Take a few pics and make sure fish is fully revived before releasing.

Good luck!
