cold water c-rig plastics

Featured Replies

i just re-read the artical on top regarding c-rigs, and think im going to hit the river iwth that on thursday.  im thinking,  now that its colder and bass a re looking for a slower, bigger meal, would it be a good idea to c-rig a super fluke (will it sink too fast?)  or a creature( would the amount of appendages give the image of a meal that is too active to pursue?)  a lizard (too cold for lizards to be cruzing around in the winter?), a craw (cant usually go wrong with this one, although bait fish seem to be the forage of choice during this time)  a fat ika (sounds good to me and bass have a very limited exposure to ikas here) or a straight worm (will it impart enough action to entice a bite?)  these are part of my pre fishing dilemas.  any suggestions or tactics? ill be rigging up with a brass weight and a glass bead on 12 youzuri, with a  15# flouro leader.

site info:  im banking it, water is murky, lots of scattered structure on the bottom, grass beds at 6-12 feet.  average depth, 4-15 feet.  water temp, high 50 to low 60 depending on sunlight.  usually light to moderate winds and scattered clouds this time of year.

I could only wish I had water that warm right now. When the water was that warm I was having pretty good success on sweet beavers, but I was fishing for smallmouth. With water in the 50's I like junebug brushhogs or redbug. For smallies the baby brush and for largies the reg.brush.How nice it must be to fish water like that this time of year.Catch some for me.Jim

Your conditions are very similar to mine right now.   I'm not a big fan of c-rigs, but I fish alot of soft plastics.  what I want now is something that reminds me of myself, namely fat and lazy so the fat ika seems perfect.  Good luck.

I usually stay with one of three c-rig baits in the colder months. Lots of folks down-size at this time, but I tend to stay with larger profile baits for the c-rig.

1. Regular Zoom Brush Hog...green pumpkin, watermelon/red most of the time

2. GYCB Hula Grub...4" or 5" ..rootbeer/green

3. Zoom lizard 6"....salt and pepper, plus the colors already mentioned

This is part of what I'll be throwing tomorrow, along with a jerkbait, dropshot and a football head.

I was catching some on a Green Pumpkin 6" finese worm. Also had some luck with the same bait in Junebug,Watermelon seed, and red swirl.Green Pumpkin has been my best color.Think I'll give the brush hog a go on my c-rig.Time to shake things up.

sweet, thank you gentlemen.  im packing my bags for tomorrow so im not rushing in the morning and waking the wife, and im just so lucky i have a bait that is close if not the same as you fellas mentioned.  i hope i get action on the c-rig, id hate to have to pull out all the punches and throw the old stand-by to get some fish.  im feeling hyped and looking forward to some good time on the water.  ill let you know how it turns out.

I got to go out yesterday and had a little luck with a Zoom baby brush hog in watermelon red and a Yum rib fry in cotton candy or some bubblegum looking color, I'm not sure what it is exactly called.

I would definintly choose a Senko or french fry type bait..............because they have little action to them and you can fish them super slow and still be affective....................I love to use Senkos on a C-rig...........its one of my best producing plastics for this style fishing.  With these lures you can still tap into that baitfish look...........and the low action.....high profile of the bait is perfect for winter situations.

Tried Zoom trick worms on the c-rig last year and was suprised at the results. Also Senkos did very well. I know this sounds wierd, but my partner tied a Stone Jig on a C-rig with a 4' leader and a zoom craw trailer that he pinched off some and burnt my rear one day. but i tried it and did not get the first hit.

c-rig results:  bass: nada   carp:1 (about 5 lbs).  i got em on a fat ika reverse rigged (black with blue tenticles)  i tried everything i had, including senkos, craws, grubs, finesse worms, flukes, kut tails, power worms, and tubes.  i guess i hadnt  expected much as i got snowed on (just flurries) while putting my gear together.  thenabout 11:30 we had a 20 min. snow downpour.  but it sure was pretty!  id like to thank gore-tex, it was hilarious to see other running for cover when the wind and flurries came, too bad there was no where to go!  still beats anything else i could have done on my day off.  thanks for all your suggestions!

were you getting ice in your guides? I tried c rigging the other day but it didn't work, Dropshotting is the winter rig of choice for me because I can keep the bait in one spot foreever

I can't recomend this rig enough. Over the past 2 years, it has become one of my go-to baits while tournament fishing. It works especially well in open water hydralla. And you don't have to deal with tying 3 knots like you do with a swivle.

(the picture shows a Z-Nail worm, which I never use. I only use it with Chompers - a senko type bait)
