If it is bigger than 9 lbs most shurely is a female ( it can be a fat male ), smaller than that you need to dye the anus with methilene blue, rinse and watch the genital papilae, females have 3 orifices, males 2, something that requires some sort of practice, I have the practice, know how to do it ( worked in the fisheries department ) and still I 'm not 100% accurate on the first sighting. Anything else is just mental calistecnics, there are no morfological differences between sexes.

Isn't it interesting that through all of our technology we have a hard time with this yet a bass is able to tell the difference. I wonder what they see, hear, smell or feel that alerts them that this is a female or male bass? Interesting really.

Distinguishing between male and female bass based on external characteristics is very difficult, except with mature fishes during spawning season.  At that time, a milky substance (milt) can be extruded from the vent of males and a few greenish colored eggs may appear at the vent of  females.  Females, however, grow significantly larger than males.  Virtually all bass over eight pounds are female.

The above is taken directly from: http://myfwc.com/fishing/Fishes/bass.html

As Raul said, visual inspection is not 100% accurate - to be 100% requires that dreaded autopsy, which by the way, most fisheries have no qualms about doing. (just for accuracy of course)

And to make identification worse, you clean the anus, dye, rinse and everytime you press to expose the genital papila the fish poops.  >:( ::)

Pretty much the same thing happens when trying to identificate Florida strain bass from Northern strain bass specially where both subspecies are present, the only way to distiguish both is by counting the scales along the lateral line ( 65-68 in Ns, 70-72 in Fs ), or trying to identify spotties from LMBs where both exist, the tooth patch on the tongue is a trademark of spotties but it is also present in 20% of the population of LMBs, the only shure way to identify them is by the location of the angle of the jaw, if it extends from the eye line it 's a LMB, if it does not extend from the eye line it is a spotted.

Pshhhhhh I knew that!

lol I always laugh when people who don't fish come up to me at a pond and say what in here...Lagemouths? And then I say no, Spotted Bass. Then they walk away with a look like what the hell? lol its preety funny.

Or another one of my favorites is when there are people who come up and ask...Hey, you actually catch fish in here?...Its like yea.....thats why i'm fishing here! lol.

Noooooope, I just like to see how lures fly when I cast 'em.  ::)

my mistake !  ;D  it 's that I just can 't resist the temptation of being mean when somebody asks me questions like that one.
