late summer bass fishing

Recommended Posts

this last few weeks we havent been catching as many bass as liked on topwater and i was wondering what types of lures i shold be using for topwater. alot of guys have been using pop rs and i havent had any luck on them so i was wondering what the best types of colors are for them. and some late summer tips where to find bass. our main forage is bluegill and frogs. we have been doing the best on wacky rigged senkos. thanks for the help. they have been killing them in our tournaments  on the pop rs and i would really like to get some good fish like that.

Buzzing frogs/toads have been productive, but that's here in western NY. Might be different where you fish.

I haven't bin having much like with pop-r's either right now, I haven't really tried anything else topwater except torpedo's and that's only produced pike which i don't like.

A buzzbait is about the only topwater bait I throw in late summer and I dont stick with it too long if I dont get bit.......the fish tend to be a little too deep to be smashing topwater baits during the "dog days".I'll throw the buzz over points early but other than that,I'm fishing bottom baits.

Find a Pop R with a black back and white bottom. I didn't have one in this color so I sanded one of them and repainted it with these colors. I also added some streaks of red on the bottom. I have been having a lot of action on it this summer in the morning. One thing I found is that if you paint the lip white it gives off more flash than the stock color, which is that bright, metallic red.

I haven't had a whole lot of luck lately with topwaters, but I've been catching some the last few trips on two baits:an original Rapala floater in gold-black back and silver black-back and a JR-5 jointed Rapala floater in the same two colors. The orinal floater  and especially the jointed floater are small and subtle. They don't make much noise.I think that is making a difference.
