Recommended Posts

Maybe we can do this backwards.  I don't carry a scale.  Can you guys throw some estimates out for me?  Don't know the girth.  Length was 23 inches..........Thanks

That would go 7-5, based on the New York length-weight charts, assuming you're talking largemouth. Those charts are for "average" fish, and it's not easy to determine what's average. In my experience, it doesn't have to be a football, but does have to have a protruding belly. It varies due to time of year and other factors. I've seen a number of fish that looked good but weighed too little for their length, so it's hard to say for sure. However, a 23" fish is an outstanding fish, regardless.

It is inpossible to tell a fishes weight on length alone. I cought a 5lb 21" bass, and i heard of somone catching a 9.8lb 22" bass.

In the picture, it looks from 5 to 6.5lbs. That lines up with 23" fairly well, depending on what part of the country its from.

Great fish, regardless of the acual weight.

Repeating what Marty said, the NY chart says 7-5, but I think the bass is way too skinny to get there. It is, of course, very difficult to make an accurate judgement from a picture, but I have caught a few long bass that simply have no weight. I would guess either side of 5 lbs.

BTW, Last winter I caught a "ghost" fish that would have weighed every bit of 7 lbs if it were healthy or in it's prime. This bass was scary, it felt like a piece of paper when I lifted it out of the water. Honestly, I don't think it weighed a pound!
