Best bass book

Recommended Posts

I am just starting to get in to bass fishing, just moved to Atlanta from California, and was hoping for some recommendations on the best basic bass book out there.  Hopefully it would discuss what to look for in where to fish, what type of tackle to use, what techniques, basically anything else helpful.

Any suggestions?  I know I can find a lot of that info in the articles on this site.  What about a subscription to BASS magazine?

Thanks.

A subscription to BASSMASTERS magazine was the best thing that I had ever done for myself.  Each month you get a new marazine full of tips for fishing different types of bodies of water for each time of year.. I would say go with that.  Also there are hard cover books that you can get from bassmaster with basic info and info on fishing many types of lures strictly for bass, this was very useful to me!  Good luck

A subscription to Bass magazine is a must in my book.(sorry bout the pun!) There is soooo much valuable info in that magazine. BASS also has a set of books about bass as well that you can buy if you wish but the magazine is a definate for me. Also, like you said, go spend some time and read the articles that are right here on BR. There is a TON of info in those as well!  ;D

One of the books I'd buy if I was just starting out is Kevin VanDam's Bass Strategies.  It is concise at only 210 pages, but it contains all of the fundamentals on locating bass, fishing different conditions, lures to use, patterns, and how to choose equipment for yourself.  We were kind of discussing this in relation to a book by Homer Circle, Bass Wisdom, in another thread.  You might read it to get some other suggestions.  Here it is:  http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1163385002.

I agree with senile1. Kevin VanDam's Bass Strategies is a great read. Amazon has it for $12.50.

Ive got a book that Shaw Grigsby wrote. Very insightful and deals with alot. Fishing, family, friends, kids, tournaments and he even gets on the spiritual side of things and talks about how GOD has made a difference. My girlfriends daughter picked it up for me at Church and once I started reading it I couldnt put it down. Thats saying alot,I just dont read very often.

One of the first books I got that is very helpful is a B.A.S.S book called Advanced Bass Fishing Skills. You can get it new from http://www.amazon.com/ for under $5. It offers lots of info on techniques such as flipping/pitching and carolina rigging, as well more specific techniques for plastics, hard baits, topwater lures, and underwater plugs. I still refer to it occasionally even though I've read the whole thing about six times. It's a great book to get you started and I doubt you will find another one that beats the price.

The inexperienced anglers I work with all start with the following DVDs instead of books.

Kevin VanDam: Strategies for changing conditions

Larry Nixon: Tournament tactics for locating spring season bass & Tournament tactics for locating summer season bass

Tommy Martin: Deep grass jigging & Trap 'n' Bass

All can be bought from Bass Pro Shops for $9.95 each

Bass Fishing fundamentals Ken schultz

Slightly off-topic, but has anyone read Ken Schultz's new book, Bass Madness: Bigmouths, Big Money, and Big Dreams at the Bassmaster Classic? It was just published in October.

All good suggestions. One thing you cant overlook is the knowledge and experience from the members in this forum. These are the people who are out there everyday figuring it out as they go.  What they have learned and what works best for them is written for free right here. I've gained  more knowledge in the last year from this forum than any book I could have read. Yes, the so called experts have their place when it comes to teaching, just dont overlook what is right here.
