Cold, Mud, and Structure

Featured Replies

The lake (or large pond) I fish is a little weird, I will admit.  It is a little neighbour hood lake and gets little to no pressure.  It is muddy, visibility being about three inches, and SHALLOW.  When I say shallow, I mean the deepest part of the lake being six to seven feet.  There are docks all over, but they sit in water of about a foot.  Besides these docks, the only form of structure is a few places of fallen bricks.  Sadly, there are no weeds in the lake, but the bottom is made of mud, with a few gravel banks.  The food source of this lake is gizzard shad.  I don't know if there is a single bluegill in the lake.  Although most of the fish are in the one to two pound range, I usually catch many five to six pounders in the season.

Having said all this, I haven't caught a fish all winter here.  It is awesome in the spring, summer, and fall, but not the winter.  The air temperature has been in the thirty's, and tomorrow will be in the fifty's.  What lure should I use?  Thanks for the help.

Cold muddy water is never a good combo. I would slow roll a Single Colorado blade spinner around cover and then go deeper from there.

Same thing Topwater_Popper the fish are not active in the pond i fish, but i know there are fish. Its muddy, and very much the same as your pond. Have to wait for the fish to become active, but dont really know if it takes longer for the fish to become active in a pond compared to a lake, reservior, ect.

Small ponds will warm up alot faster than lakes or reservoirs due to the size and depth.

Try plastics and fish them slow or suspending jerkbaits and let them sit still for 20-30 seconds.

Ditto here....

My pond is 7 foot deep at max, it is an acre and a half, it has a mud bottom, it has some gravel at the shallow end along with some grass. We stocked it with bass, crappie, bluegill and minnows. I've tried throwing worms, crappie jigs, beetle-spins, bass-jigs, spinner-baits, etc. Nothing!

The pond is fed by a creek which is fed by a underground spring. So there is constantly cold water into the pond. I guess they are all at the dam of the pond. I will stock it this spring/summer with some pallets and anything else I can find.

God bless  8-)
