summer jigging with ice fishing rod?

Featured Replies

I'm just wondering what you guys think about jigging in the summer with an ice fishing rod. I think there could be some advantages like more control and sensitivity. Just throwing this out there, what do you guys think?

Other then not being able to cast more then 20 is one reason not to use one. But the main reason is the fish move faster in the summer. There a reason ice rods are so light. They have to be able to pick up the littlest tap. Theres no way I would trust a ice rod during the summer. If you want to use a light rod for jigging during the summer get a ultra light rod.

You might try this rod instead of a ice fishing rod.

Daiwa Triforce Shorty spinning , medium power , 6-12 line Wt.  , 1/8 -1/2 oz. lure . , 5 guides.

Length- 36 inches.

Cork handle.

Aluminum oxide guides.

Graphite blank.

I say go for it. I like to see this type of "out of the box" thinking. I have a friend who fishes primarily with 1/8 to 3/16oz jigs, and he uses a setup similar to the one that Bass-Brat suggested. It works well for him. I myself would be interested in hearing about your results. Good luck.
