properly weighing a fish

Featured Replies

what is the proper technique for weighing a big bass...through the lip or like putting on a stringer?

i do it by passing the hook up through a gill plate, pay special attention and be careful with the lls.

If there is a hole present where the hook was removed use that.  Otherwise I place the scale carefully in the gill plate (only if you have the large, smooth, round hook, though).

Bring your bathroom scale, when you get on the boat weigh yourself, note the weight. When you get a fish weigh yourself again holding the fish the difference between both readings is the weight of the fish

Me Too!!! ;D ;D

Most scales that I ever had were made to push the hook through the mouth. I recently purchased a Berkley digital grip scale that clamps the fishes mouth it goes to 30lbs I do have and old Berkley hook scale that goes to 60+ pounds I never use the gill plate to many things can go wrong there the mouth will heal and close the hole.

I go through the lip....then step on the tail and yank till it weighs what I want it to....hehehehee just kidding, but yes I use the lip.

or you can put a 2 ounce sinker in his mouth

Typically though, I just use my trusty old Berkely 50 lb digital, which I have sharpened the hook on, and I puncture a small hole right behind the tip of the bottom jaw, off to one side or the other (there is quite a bit of connective tissue right in the center that you don't want to damage). I really only drag out my certified scale (the one in the top photo) for really big, or otherwise special catches.

Peace,

Fish
