Texas Rig Question

When you put the hook through the body do you put it all the way through or just barely? Do you put it directly in the middle or what? What can you do to make an easier hook set

I know the concept on how to make them, I just dont know how far to put the hook through

Experiment.

I generally go down about 1/2 inch, but will vary this depending on the bait.

There is no rule, only what works best with any given bait on any given day.

bass fishing is like that.

I find that the consistancy of the plastic will determine how far I bury the hook.  On a power worm, I'll make sure the hook is completely inside the plastic, while with a tube, I'll generally "skin hook" the bait.  Generally, I like to have the hook end totally covered by the plastic, but with some tougher plastics its impossible to get a hook set.  Like Avid sez, experiment with it.  If you're getting strikes, but are unable to set the hook, maybe you need to let the hook hang outside more...

I do 2 things on my texas rigs:

1:  I make sure the hook's gap that I'm using is twice the size of the width of the bait I'm using.  In other words, the gap of the hook should be wide enough for 2 of whatever bait you're using.  This will help with hook sets.

2:  I like to push the hook into the plastic and keep my finger on the other side, when I start to feel the hook point coming out the other side like it's about to poke me, I stop.  This seems to work good for me.

Sometimes i will poke it just through and let it go back in. That way it is ready come out when i set the hook.

i push mine all the way through....then the straight part on the end of a EWG gammy hook sits nicely against the plastic...and still remains weedless
