Spawn behavior??

Featured Replies

I saw two fish what appeared to be on a bed, just standing side by side.. Both were 8inches roughly, one a bit bigger then the other..

The slightly larger one constantly kept rolling over on its side and rubbing it's under belly on the other fish...

Is that normal spawning behavior? What was going on? I didn't think fish physically got dirty..

They were actualy in the act of spawning. This does not take to long. Usualy when you see bedded fish they are either getting ready to spawn or they are protecting thier eggs. When you see them rubbing and turning likethat they are getting it on!

After the Belly Rubbing they usually share a cigarette

Hawg_Hunter actually has a small clip of 2 fish spawning last yr.

Next time you see that, know that you are watching the actual act.  Feel like a peeping Tom now?   ;D

Thats the male inducing the female into dropping her eggs so he can drop his sperm on them. You were lucky enough to witness a wonderful part of life, procreation. Its the birds and the bee's my friend. Pretty neat you got to witness that. I had my granddaughter at the park yesterday feeding the geese, swans and ducks and it was pretty active, if you get my drift. She said " Pap, those ducks are playing piggy back ". I just said, Uh, huh. I will let my son have to explain all of that, lol. Its his turn, lol. :)

I thought 8" bass weren't sexually mature.  Maybe they were just a couple of crazy kids playing doctor  ;D

Seriously, though, are 8" bass capable of reproduction?

LBH has bass porn! (hey man could you hook a brutha up with a CD of that stuff? )

I thought the same thing. These bass seem to be to small to have reached maturity.

Maybe they're only practising for next year or they were gay bass!

;D ;D ;D ;D

Leaving the question of 8" bass spawning.

I would love to see that video.

If anyone has a link, please share.

thanks,

avid

look like this?

Exactly. I took a video with my cell phone, they were doing it for 30 minutes or more. I kept looking over, and he was either doing it, or would do it again within minutes...

I'll try and post the video if I get time later, the cellphones quality is quite crap...

These fish were 6"-8" no where near over 8", and 8 is on the high side. These guys were little, that's why I was so confused...

It's strange, but interesting, I'm going back today, I'll let you guys know if I see anymore news..

I would have thought all spawning would be done, considering it's been 90degrees here for a week now and water temps pretty high as well..

Maybe they were just getting the feel for it for next year?

This is our current scenario in RI.  Expecting a short powerful spawn this yr as fish have been waiting patiently for temps to elevate.

5 days ago- no signs of spawn    RI water temps slow to warm this yr Fianlly had back to back 80 degree days-above avg

4 days ago- couple beds spotted

3 days ago- overnight, beds EVERYWHERE today but none show any sign of a "sweet spot" or occupants

2 days ago- fish on many if not most beds 30+ fish caught all 1-2.75 lbs

1 day ago- full blown spawn  40+ fish all male again  "sweet spots" are starting to show up

today-same spawning situation, fish and beds tougher to see because of higher winds but nonstop action just the same.

Assuming tomorrow or saturday the females will start showing themselves.  This is when we back off for a week or two and let them do their thing.
