I thought the spawn was over!

Featured Replies

Most of the fish here (nj) have finished spawning, well over 2-3 weeks ago.  I found a new pond in my area and the fish were still on beds there.  At first, I kept catching the little males but after a while I got the bigger females to bite.  In an hour of fishing, I ended up catching 5 between 3 and 4 pounds.  Not bad for my area, but I was still a little suprised at still seeing the bass on their beds.

I'm going to a pond in my area today where the bass did not spawn until the beginning of June last year. Going to see if this holds true for this year too.  That same pond had a second period of spawning at the end of the summer, something I've never heard of before coming to this board.

Here in the midwest the spawn has been all screwed up -- they would start spawning and then we would get cold rain that would push 'em back -- after the water cleared up some, they would move back in.  Not sure what the overall effect of this will be.

Spawning times tend to vary from lake to lake. Water temp is the biggest factor here, and some bodies of water take longer to warm up.

Bass like other sunfish will spawn more than once a year in alot of places, depending on the conditions during the first spawn....They wont spawn as late into summer and as oftern as say bream, but they do spawn until mid-june in alot of places.

I don't know about New Jersey, but here in the Midwest an early to mid-April freeze pushed the spawn back by a couple of weeks.  As Shad_Master stated it has been weird.  Generally, under normal conditions, the spawn around Kansas City starts in April and runs into May.  Then as the spawn was getting under way we had torrential rains and most of the lakes became muddy and clear as hot chocolate.

I've lived in New Jersey for most of my life (Hillside - Elizabeth - Sayreville - New Brunswick - East Brunswick).

What I have found is that the bedding season in southern Jersey tends to peak around early May,

while the spawn in northern Jersey generally peaks in late May. This will vary of course, from lake-to-lake.

By the way, the bass that you mentioned are brutes by Jersey standards!

You are correct, but I was afraid to even mention that.

Maybe Al Gore is actually onto something :(

They are just starting to move up onto the beds at my local pond also. The Bluegill and Carp have already spawned there. I caught 10 bass lass night on a senko, mostly small males. I live in NC, and the spawning is long over at a local lake.

I live smack dab in the middle of New Jersey and the spawns over and gone. Coliers mills was late march/early may, Oakford was around the same time and the private ponds around here where about a week later. Right now the sunnies' spawn is in full swing in all the lakes around here, a sure sign the bass spawn is completly over. The carp spawn was at its height last week.

I know what you mean, I wnt to the  lake yesterday and I saw about 10 fish on their beds.

I cought about 7 out of those 10
