Duckweed!!!

Featured Replies

Hey guys I have a problem. This creek behind my house that leads to the main river is now willed with duckweed and other types of grasses. It used to be a pretty clear lake, but theres a road that ends one of it and trees have fallen from hurricanes. Its basically a big muddy grass pit. I have already tried to get the city to clean it out but it didnt work. Is there any way there are any bass down there?

Hmmmm, you might have to go hunt.  Go weedless......i stress.........weedless.  Do a lot of flipping into holes in the brush, under the tree's, etc.  Try weightless first.  When searching for em keep in touch with your line (watching it, feeling it).  The strikes might be subtle.  Weedless tubes work fine in brush.  I'm tryin to think of what i use specifically in dense cover.  Only thing that comes to mind is you might want to try shaky jigs with medium sized grubs.  Just experiment in various locations.  If you find that you can't find any try near that creek, the creek mouth even IN the creek.  You just gotta hunt for them.  Good luck!

Spot Remover Jig-N-Paca Craw  ;)

One thing you might want to try is throwing a Senko or Ring-Fry upon on the duck weed and hopping it slowly along the top -- if there are bass under there they will blow up through the slop to get at it.

Agree with shad master!  One of the best lures for duckweek over shallow flats is a Johnson Silver Minnow weedless spoon with a pork or plastic chunk trailer. I prefer black for both. The best time when the sun is bright is morning or late afternoon and mid-day is good when cloudy. The blow-ups may miss a few, but the nice thing is that the bass hit more than once.  I use a stinger hook.

A Mr. Twister Exude Creature bait is also better in the short size because the plastic get super slippery when wet and slides over the veg. I have less luck with plastic worms or sticks over duckweed.

Work the baits with long pauses and short twitches.

well I have to fish from the bank, and there would be no way for a boat to get there. Its pretty bad. Im not sure if its duckweed or not but its pretty bad. The whole creek is filled with it.

A few species of floating weeds are inpenetrable. We have one variety choking a stream where I used to canoe fish and it's impossible to even get the canoe upstream. The bass can only be caught in spring before the mat gets established. It has leaves that radiate from the center and thick stems that catch everything.

Good luck!

Hmmm...I'm not sure you're talking about duckweed.  Duckweed is tiny little plants, no roots, just leaves, that floats on the surface.  Weedless baits is not an issue and you can't throw a senko or anything on top.  It will just fall straight through.  I could be wrong.  Maybe duckweed can get thick enough to hold up a lure, but I've never seen it like that.

Got a picture of the stream?
