Hook set help!!!

Featured Replies

The other night a buddy of mine were fishing all day and werent doing any good at all. Then we ended up going with weightless watermelon- black flake senkos and the bites starting coming. The only problem is that out of all the bites there were only two that we got in the boat. I know that it takes a strong hook set with a t-rig and that it helps to create a little groove for the hook, but even after doing all of this the fish kept getting off. I could understand a little more if there was a slack line , or if they threw it in the weeds but this was in open water! So, i am open for any tips?

Check your drag to make sure your line/reel doesn't slip when setting the hook.

Be careful of the fish swimming at you, it make take the tension/pressure off the live and make it easier to throw the hook.

Don't let him jump.

What size of hook were you using? Could be that maybe your hook is not getting through the senko well enough to penetrate the fishes mouth.

Unfortunately, those sound like things we have learned in the last two tournaments.....   ;)

Whoa!  didn't even think about that!

Nice Work on referencing real life, money costing experiences!   :-*

I would suggest two things:

Try a 3/0 or 4/0 Extra Wide Gap hook on the senko.

If you use a small hook they may not be getting it in their mouth.

Using Fluorocarbon line.

My hook sets have gotten a lot better since I moved to Fluorocarbon line. I only use mono on my spinning reels and crankbait rods now. I am going to try Fluorocarbon on a spinning reel soon. I hear that it can be bad though.

Well i have been using a 3/0 hook, and have not changed much, and finally something changed in my favor and i managed to go 3 for 3 on my senko hooksets...  It must have just been one of those days though...
