Whats the "Kissing" sound under the slop?

Featured Replies

When we fish slop, and hear the "kissing sound" under the weeds, what are we hearing?  Is it feeding bass?  Is it grass carp sucking up their lunch?

Bream - Any of several European freshwater fishes of the genus Abramis, especially A. brama, having a flattened body and silvery scales.

A similar fish, especially:

Any one of various saltwater fishes in the family Sparidae, such as the porgy.

Any one of various freshwater sunfishes of the genus Lepomis and related genera, such as the bluegill.

[b]So the kissing sound are bluegill that are eating?

Thanks George,

Was hoping you'd tell me, that every time I heard a kissing sound, it was a state record bass eating a frog, darn.

fishy foreplay

"kissing sound" under the weeds, what are we hearing? You might be right about the grass carp. I fished in asia and many species of fish from asia make a kiss sound out of water. Northern Snakehead during the spawn comes up on top of the water and a makes a kiss sound by moving water through its gills.

I'm guessing it is niksfishinmom down there kissing fish !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard a pro, I can't remember who, talk about "if you pull your boat up next to the slop and are about to fish a nice weedless frog, and you don't hear that kissing sound, there's no bass under there"

Just thought that was interesting.

I went fishing this morning. Heard the kissing sound on this pond every second. Kiss Kiss Kiss Kiss over and over.  I threw a frog into the thick weeds and slowly put the frog into a hole in the weeds.  A monster came up for a beautiful topwater strike, with a beautiful splash.

I pulled up hard and set the hook.  He was on for about 2 seconds, before he jumped out of the water.  A 4 pounder at least(a very nice size for Boulder) then he went down into the weeds.  I kept a tight line and SNAP! My 10 pound test trilene went bye bye.

I remember during the 60's frequently the use of grass led to kissing

I guess I don't have to tell you that 10 lb line doesn't cut it with frogs in heavy slop.  In a pinch, I'll use 20 lb + mono, but this is one situation where 50 + braid is unquestionably superior.

Yikes!!

It runs the gamut of small fish to big fish, but my experience says it's either baitfish (bluegill or relative) or bass (of any size).

I hear this all the time on the Mississippi, it's catfish hanging out in the shallow water. Not sure what they are doing though...

HMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm! It has been said that if you remember the 60's you weren't there. :o ::) ;D

You know though, if ya look around, it might be Bill Dance. Everytime I see him on the TV he's swappin' spit with some bass ( I think that's illegal in Wisconsin, everything else is.).
