Deep or Shallow?

Featured Replies

In a pond I fish, there is no structure out in the middle of the pond, and it is only about 6-8 ft. deep, and very muddy.  In the heat of the summer, would the bass be located in the deep water, or in the warm, shallow water with structure?  This question has been bugging me for some time, and I would appreciate some opinions.

Well, being that there is no structure, and the deepest part is 6-8 ft. deep, they are going to be in the heavy shallow cover. Main reason being that there isnt a significant temp. dif. And in many cases, it isnt too hard to catch these fish in the shallow cover. Just put on a black/blue Colorado spinnerbait (BIG single blade), and slow roll it. Believe it or not, muddy and warm water is my strength. The two fish in my avatar were cought in this situation using the same technique.

are you positive theres no structure anywhere?

You say it's muddy so I take it there are no vegetation?Late in the evening around the cover. That's when and where I'd try.

depends on the fish to tellu the truth  some like shallow and some like deep  usally the bigger ones will be in the deep though

It depends. If there is an inflowing stream or a spring anywhere there is going to be a lot of fish there. Also, it depend on where you live. If you live far enough north then the bass may never go deep in the summer.

Bass love structure when they can find it, but if it doesn't exist they can live very well without it.

During the summer I'd expect to find the bass tucked in the best weed beds available, regardless of depth.

If the water is muddy all year-round, then it's not likely that good vegetation will be growing deeper than 2 or 3 feet.

Actually this isn't a bad situation because it sharply narrows down location.

During midday you'd probably have to fish right inside or at least very tight to the slop.

During twilight (dawn & dusk) bass might be inclined to wander out in the longer shadows cast by cover.
