My brother is my main fishing partner and it never fails that he catches ten fish to my one. Yesterday he caught 6 or 8 bass and I never got BIT! Unbelievable! Using basically the same soft plastics. Heres what was different and tell me what you think is the main reasons he does so much better, other than I SUCK!

Both using senkos on bait casters

He used shaky head jig, I had weighted worm hook and weightless

He ties every thing on, I use a small snap swivel

He had 14# flouro, I had 10# Yozuri hybrid

Water was clear and calm fishing from creek bank

Now I can accept he"s a better fisherman than me , but not even a bite? :'(

What do you guys think?

My buddy usually will beat me by a couple of fish 8 out of ten times when were on the same boat. Things change when were fishing on separate boats, we end up being very close.

Don't follow him when you fish. He is probably not better, just doing a few things different.

I personally don't know but Burley can answer this for ya since he has the same problem. I can tell you this in Burley's case it is because his partner is just that much better. 8-)

You didn't mention retrieve speed or type of retrieve.

Is your retrieve significantly faster than his?

Is he dragging the bottom and you're hopping?

Is he waiting longer to begin his retrieve?

Could have been the swivel and/or in a small creek the fish can bunch up on one pc of structure. He could have been fishing that one piece. Also an experienced angler can pick those spots out and find the presentation that the fish prefer, pretty quickly.  Keep going with him and pay close attention to every detail. This will provide you with valuable knowledge as well as help you to understand the why's and where's in bass fishing.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have a feeling you are missing bites.  If ya'll are fishing basically the same and he caught 8 I doubt you had no bites.  Are you using the right set-up for soft plastics?

If you are aboslutley postitive you got no bites I would say you are doing something drastically different than your brother.  Probably retrieve speed as others have said.

That brings up another question.  Was your brother's jig hook exposed making it much easier to hook the fish?

To mattm's point it is quite possible that without the right patience his brother could be catching them all day and he would get nothing.  If he's swimming the worm above the bottom then his presentation is drastically different.

My brother in law has no patience for soft plastics fishing and I'll out catch him every time because he doesn't wait until the worm is truly on the bottom.  And that isn't because I'm necessarily a great fisherman, it's just that you gotta make sure that you are fishing the bottom.

I'm on the opposite end of that deal.  I have 3 buddies I go with all the time and they always end up with less fish than me.  It usually ends up being a 2-1 ratio I've noticed.  Just to see if it's because I get to the fish first we switch spots in the boat everytime we go out and the ratio stays the same.  We'll even use the exact same lures and setups.

I think it has alot to do with where you cast to, retrieval speed, and luck.  The latter being a big factor.  

p.s. - my one friend did beat me once about 3 yrs ago, so i can't say always.  but it was only by one fish  ;D

I'm sure you will, theres always one day where the other guy gets lucky!  I still hear about the day that he beat me by one fish lol

lol i know, I'm proud to say that I taught my one buddy everything he knows and he got 2nd place in the older division of the jr. pa state classic last year  ;D

Your results in one day of fishing depends largely on luck. Your average results in many days of fishing depends largely on skill. With this said, it supplies the information and understanding of why some anglers consistantly fair better than others when fishing the same water with the same baits. As luck would have it, even the lesser experienced can outperform a Pro on any given day. Some say, "I'd rather be lucky than good any day". Well I'm the opposite, 'I'd rather be good than lucky any day".  With excellent skills, your opportunity for luck is substantially increased because you are continuously putting yourself in a position to be successful.

This is the reason that I rarely say Good Luck but moreover Good Fishing. As your skills and experience improve so shall your luck.

The baits you used were the same but the major difference was in the presentation and line used.

If I were in that situation, I would have switched to what he was using, because the bass were telling you and him what they preferred at that time.

The difference in retrieve is another likely factor.

I don't mind being outfished by my partner and as a matter of fact I want them to outfish me.  I get just as much pleasure.  I usually fish alone but when someone fishes with me, it is usually my kids, nephew, brothers or dad and I want them to catch fish so they can know the same joy and pleasure I feel.  That's just me.

I personally don't know but Burley can answer this for ya since he has the same problem. I can tell you this in Burley's case it is because his partner is just that much better. 8-)

Hmmm, in the last two years I think you've gotten me twice.  8-)

I have a few fishing partners, I mostly go out with 4bizz, and as many of you can guess, he kicks my @$$ all the time.  I've only outfished him twice in the 2-3 years i've been fishing with him.  I'd rather have it that way, because he gets real crabby when I outfish him.  I really think it helps fishing with someone better than you, I always learn something when that way.

im in the same boat. my friend always outfishes me and when ever i suggest something he bashes it and tells me im wrong lol

OK! Went back to the same spot today and and hooked up with 3 nice bass and missed three hits. Mattm, no, believe me, I had no bites yesterday! The difference today was I had spot remover and shaky heads. Guess little things DO make a difference.

You mean, you have a snap swivel attached to your hook with a bullet above it? :-? I'm confused. Anyways... if you're using a swivel attached to your hook, and he is tying directly to the line, I'm SURE that has something to do with it. You should also be tying directly to the hook.

With that said, you still can't beat the shakey head though.   (Don't use a swivel attached to this.) lol

My partner outfishes me in the back of the boat. My excuse is I am too busy guiding and putting him on fish. That's my story and I am sticking with it.
