Hook Cutting Pliers?

Featured Replies

Guys,

Maybe you can help me. I am looking for a pair of pliers that has a hook cutter at the very tip for snipping off a hook in a fish'e gullet. I know that I have seen these somewhere but I can't seem to find them.

Anyone know where I can find pliers like this?

Thank you,

Tom

I don't know for sure but you might

want to check www.xtools.us

I know Xtools has pliers and cutters, but I

am not sure about the specific model you

are looking for.

I'm sure you can find them, but might I suggest reviewing the articles and posts here at BassResource.com

there are proven methods of hook removal that do not require leaving any portion of the hook in the fishs gullet.   It basically involves pushing the hook forward rather than trying to pull it back out.  then hooking it out through the gill.

I have done it several times.  It works.

A pair of long nose wire snips work well. I have not seen any pliers with cutters at the end. Always as the base

Thanks Men but these pliers I am interested in have a long snout and can cut a hook off down deep in the fish so that the hook tip rusts away or is absorbed and discharged by the fish's natural physical characteristics.

What I am looking for is a plier / cutter that if a fish is hooked deep with a lure you can snip the hook rather than hurt the fish severely by trying to remove the hook. The barb end of the hook can be disintegrated by the fish's natural defenses or rust away not causing life threatening damage to the fish. I saw an ad for pliers like this late one night on cable and I'd like a pair of them.

I have all the gear for removing hooks and lures from the fish I catch but I'd like to not fatally harm the fish that may swallow my lures.

Spring is coming and I really like to release my fish so that they can breed, live and bear more off-spring. :)

My friend bought a pair last fall. He is on a business trip now but, when he returns I will find out where he purchased them. If I remember right they were $78.00.

TM:  Can you reach deeply stuck hooks with the Dbarb and just remove the hook without cutting it.....like you would with a 'normal' pair of long-nose pliers?

Dan

I use Craftsman Heavy Duty Cutting Pliers. They cut Gamakatsu EWG's like butter.

Something like this: Craftsman Heavy Duty Cutting Pliers

I use the same.  Makes it super easy to get a gut hook out.  Get the longest one you can find.  If you wanna go cheap you can.   I like the no ? return at Sears.

Lightninrod, the  d-barb  pliers have carbide cutters and a magnet to cut the end off of the hook so you can back it out without tearing up the fish. The magnet holds the cut off barb. The long handles give lots of leverage so it's easy to cut the  hook. I don't remember  how I found out about them , but  they work quite well.

Travlin Man,

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I was looking for. I'll be placing an order.

I keep tools on board for every contingency in regards to fishing. I like having needle nose pliers, cutters and forceps but I need the D-Barb cutters to round out my kit.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks Travlin man. I will definitely purchase a pair of those Debarbs. Twenty bucks is a heck of a lot cheaper than seventy eight bucks and they are probably just as good. I especially like the idea that they are magnetized in order not to allow the cut off piece of hook to remain in the fish. I looked on the BPS site and could not find  them in there but, I hope they will have them in the store. :)

Your welcome guys. Just remember they are not stainless, so a little silicon spray etc. every once in a while.   T. M.

Awesome tool gonna order one for mysef thats what I like about this forum always excellent and new information every time Im on. My wife wishes I never found this place but the bait monkey loves it.

Thanks for the link Avid, I will try that technique as well. There is nothing worse than working on getting a hook out just to watch the fish float on top of the water, struggling. It makes me feel terrible, even though it is rare. Maybe the cutters as well as your link will help prevent this. :)

other options though probably not as good for bass, check out rollie and helens muskie shop under the tools section, you'll see a couple of bolt cutters that muskie fisherman use.  should work for bass also.

I always just keep a very small pair of wire cutters in the boat.  you can pick those up at any hardware store.

Like Avid said, try that method, it really is incredible how good it works!  The hook usually pops right out.

But when all else fails check out a pair of long neck diagonal cutters.

Go on www.snapon.com and under search put 311CP

They really do work great - just hope you don't have to use them.

Another vote for the D-barb tool, that is one handy little piece of equipment to have in the tackle bag.
