Key Points to Locating Post Spawn Bass

A good place to start would be the first drop off a spawning flat and from there, any channels or ditches that lead into deeper water.

Points are good gathering spots too, especially for fish that spawn in cuts or bays off the main lake.

Key Points.......................UMMMM. I think you got it right......

Key Points. Long, shallow, main and secondary points to be axact. ;)

Bass hold on these to ambush the migrating shad and other baitfish in the lake.

Points, point the way to bass  ;)

Reverse the direction from spawn to pre-spawn; start at the shallow spawning areas and progressively work deeper working each break line. These points do not have to be the big pieces of structure you see above the surface.

Catt said it best.  It's a migration right?  They move up from the Winter into Pre Spawn, they move in and Spawn and then they move back out for the Post Spawn and get in to their Summer pattern.  Just think about where you caught them back in early Spring before they got on the beds and that's where they should be.

Points, drop offs near the spawning flats, bluff walls, etc are all good places to look.  If you have grass in your fishery then check both inside and outside weed lines.  Remember that regardless of spawn phase bass are edge creatures and relate to edges more than any other kind of structure.

They are an ambush predator and don't fight fair out in the open water that much so find your best cover, depth, and structure that affords them the best opportunity to eat and not get caught or killed and that's your seasonal honey hole most likely.

Summer patterns may differ depending on your fishery.  Our Summer and post spawn patterns are very similar until Fall sets in.  Don't forget to throw your topwater stuff too.  Good luck.

what bait/lure would you suggest using on the flats and points during post spawn?  i can be more specific if u need

I'd probably start with a slow moving crankbait or spinnerbait just to "search" a little bit.....then once I found something, I'd probably end up with a jig or a carolina rig in hand.

Fish tend to suspend a little bit after the spawn around here so I never rule out a hard jerkbait. An *** *** is effective on post spawners that are suspended also.

Post spawn bass move back to where they staged before moving up onto the spawning sites. Depending on the lake classification, river or pond the bass live in determines where the staged and where they will locate during post spawn.

You are from Tennessee, so your TVA lakes are highland type impoundments with a lot of creek arms. the smallmouth bass tend to spawn near the main lake or just inside those creek arm on small flats with gravel and wood cover wind protected coves. The post spawn smallies are usually on the first break with wood or rocks near those coves. The largemouth bass tend to move further back into the creek arms seeking larger wind protected areas. The LMB post spawn sites are what is known as primary secondary points with some wood cover. A primary secondary point is the point that divides 2 or more creek arms back inside the larger creek arms. The bass move into the smaller wind protected creeks to spawn, then move back out to the nearest primary secondary point and recoperate while holding close to wood cover if availble, if no cover is available the bass will hold tight to structure elements.

Don't overlook the obvious!

Bass are not the only spawners in bass spawn territory, nor are they the last to spawn in those areas.

Easy pickings makes the spawning areas an excellent place for spawned out and recovered bass. As well as following back to pre-spawn and deeper areas, be sure to check in the vicinity of spawning beds. Top water makes an excellent bait at this time, as does swimming baits.
