how does barrametric pressure affect fishing

Featured Replies

I typed barrametric pressure into the search deal and got nothing. Question is how does it affect fishing.

high pressure does.....

low pressure does.....

fluctuating pressure, going from high to low several times in a day does...

I have been trying to get more technical in my fishing, anything helps

thanks

lower the better if you can catch it right before it starts to climb thats the best

I haven't looked into it really. I've always called the barometer, "the afterthought". By the time the fish respond, the weather has changed and it looks like they are simply responding to associated sky and water conditions. But, again, I haven't given it a fair shake. Others may disagree.

Here are some articles on the skeptical side of the issue:

I did a lot of reading about this some time back, I'll have to search again to find out where I found this...but apparently bass are more active when the pressure is falling or when it has been steady for a few days.  When pressure is rising it causes bass to be less active because of the stress it causes on their swim bladder.  (At least thats what the article said- I haven't done any direct research of course)

When the barometric pressure drops, organisms become more buoyant thus floating off the bottom. This makes plankton more vulnerable which causes baitfish can go into a feeding frenzy. This stimulates predators like bass to feed on the baitfish.

When the pressure rises, the plankton is pushed back toward the bottom where it is less vulnerable to baitfish. Thus the baitfish that is full of plankton goes into a less active state as do the predators.

Implement these ideas into your strategies; target fish with bottom bouncing baits like jigs on high pressure days and cover the upper section of the water column on low pressure days with a spinner bait or top water.

Or simple do what I do and that is to target bass on deep water structure which is less affected by weather changes.
