Do bass eat catfish ?

Featured Replies

The lake I fish in Cyprus has a fair number of channel cats , most are small . I never kill a bass , so i was wondering if you guys had ever found the remains of a cat fish in a bass or whether the spiky fins prevent them being eaten .

Yes, and sometimes their eyes are bigger than their mouths!

Over the years I have "unstuck" a number of floating pairs,

catfish stuck in a bass' mouth. Oddly, with the fish I have

saved,  every one was able to swim away and appeared to be

fine.

Yes a bass will eat anything it must to survive.  Those spiky fins prevent it being the preferred meal obvioulsy.

I remember seeing were officials with the Texa's Lunker program reported an 18 lb LMB that ate a dozen 9" channel cats in one setting. It was in a story about how lunkers differ greatly in their feeding aggressiveness.

Its kinda wierd when you open up your live well's and find baby ducks floating and the occasional mudpuppy :o!!

This is gonna sound like a fish story, but here goes...

We went jug fishing for flatheads using small live bluegill. A little flathead ate the bluegill, then a 6lb largemouth ate the flathead. He had half the flathead down his throat and we figured the bass surely would not survive so we stuck it in the floating cage next to the dock along with the cats we were going to clean.

When we pulled the cage up the next day, the bass had almost completely swallowed the flathead and seemed pretty frisky so we released it with hook, bluegill, and flathead, still attached.

Yes.

My experience has been baby catfish.

I have not seen any larger catfish eaten by a LMB.  :)

Smallmouth love madtoms and they are tiny catfish. Bass may prefer baby catfish.

A bass will eat anything that a) doesn't eat it first and B) will fit between its lips.  :)

Question:

Do bass eat ________?

Answer:

Yes

Insert anything that you want to in the blank and if it moves a bass will eat it.   They'll also eat things that don't move too (deadsticking).
