Jigs

Featured Replies

I'm looking on some advise on jigging. I've been tryin with some SK bitsy bug and smallie jigs along with some larger sizes. I have a bunch of different colors but very little confidence jog fishing. I've been throwing them on a 7'3" carrot stick mh with a 7:1 pro qualifier. Normally i use this rod and set up for C-rigging but figured it would work the same. I have 35lb power pro on. If anyone has any techniques, what king of structure to look for. anything that might help i really wany to learn more about jigging also any info about trailers and when to use them. I live in RI and the ice has been out for about 2-3 weeks so the water is barely 40 in the shallows andd deffinitly colder deeper. I've been catching a decent amount of fish on lipless crankbaits. Please let me know what kinda advice you guys got. Thanks alot.

I always use a trailer, sometimes a GYCB double tail grub, or the back of a brush hog. I like black and blue jigs....

Either swim it or drag it slowly across the bottom of the lake, short drags and let it sit...

Maintain contact with your lure at all times, allow the lure to free-fall unrestricted, but without letting slack form in the line; follow your lures down with your rod tip.

Pay close attention to the depth you're fishing, any sudden change in the amount of line you're using could mean you've been bit. For instance, if you're fishing 10 feet of water and the lure suddenly stops at the 7 depth, it's possible a bass has taken the bait. If you're fishing 5 feet of water and 8 feet of line sinks, chances are good a bass is traveling with the bait. This is extremely true on the initial cast and no line movement maybe noticed.

Strikes will sometimes be so subtle with no line movement that they can go unnoticed if you feel is a spongy sensation, as if the line suddenly got heavy set the hook

Always remember bottom contact is critical!  :)

Spend some time in the BassResource.com Library,

"Fishing Articles" and "Tacklebox" at the top of the

page. You will learn far more from reading those

articles than bits and pieces on here. After doing a

little homework, come back to the Forum and ask

anything you want. We are all here to help, but you

need a grasp of the basics to get to the next level.

Google some of the fishing catalogs on line, Cabelas, BassPro, etc.

Look at the various lures, jigs, trailers, soft plastics, swimbaits, etc and familiarize yourself with what they look like.

You know what. You will do well. A lot on here don't know and they would have not asked these questions. They are definitely beginner questions and good for you for asking.

A trailer is either a piece of pork or plastic(Most popular) that you thread on the jig hook. Push the point of the hook down through the top of the plastic about 1/2 inch then bring the hook point out the side of the plastic. You may need to experiment with the dept you go before bringing the hook point out of the plastic. You want the jig and the trailer to line up in a straight line.

Examples of plastic trailers:

Craw Worms

Baby Brush Hogs

Twin Tail grubs

There are many more and I have even seen people bite the head off a lizard and thread it on a jig hook. Most manufacturers of plastics have an array of smaller plastics that can be used. Hit a tackle department and ask a sales associate to point out a few.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

mwbrown, did not mean to hijack your thread. Just trying to answer his question.
