My apologies if I am posting this in the wrong place.  I am not being notified of replies to threads after I check the "get notifications" button at the bottom of that thread's frame.  Am I doing something wrong?  Any advice?

I am having the same issue.  

If you want to recieve notifications of PM's and Board Notifications, you need to go into your profile (User CP>>Profile) and check 2 things:

1.  On the "Options" page, look for "Post and Board Notifications:" and select "Yes" for  "Notify me of new Notifications by eMail?", then click "save changes" at the bottom of the page.

If you ONLY want Topic notifications, just do step #1.

2. On the "PM Preferences" page, select "Yes" for "Notify me of new PMs by eMail:", then click "save changes" at the bottom of the page.

If you ONLY want PM notifications, just do step #2.

Me too!  You would think the powers that be would know we are mostly guys (not all) and we do it first, then read the instructions when it doesn't work.
