does anyone use this technique? a drop shot but with a pegged creature or beaver style bait on bottom instead of a sinker. basically 2 baits at the same time. does this work? why wouldnt it work?any info? thanks in advance

yeah, its called a dumby rig, we use it for hard to catch bed fish with either a jig or jighead on the bottom and normally a fluke on top.

When the drop shot or down shot technique first came out, back in the late 80's, it was common to use a jig for the weight and 2 hooks about a foot apart for the online worms for a total of 3 offerings, the legal limit for fresh water fishing in California. The presentation was called "stacking".

Use the bottom lure, like a jig, as the weight.  

A couple years ago, a thread ran here about state laws...   some state laws aimed at preventing snagging were loosely written and the drop shot was could have been considered a snagging rig...  so to get around that they used bass jigs as the weights.  Michigan rings a bell but I'm not positive on which state(s).

Mn laws say you can only use one lure so this set up would be illegal

wow that sucks,  here in tx we use double rigged senkos and flukes quite a bit.

OK, here's the deal with this rig. If you are going to use a 1/4 - 1/2 oz. jig as the bottom weight, that just fine. However, your DS leader then has to be pretty substantial, to allow for proper hook-set. This defeats the advantage of the DS, in that this is - really - a finesse type presentation.

I've been drop shotting for about 6 seasons now; but I fish for small mouth bass in deep, off-shore structures. Consequently I use pretty lite leaders, usually 4# test fluorocarbon. I have fished for LM in shallower, thicker vegetation, with a 10# DS leader with a fair amount of success, but you'd really have to step that up to about a 15 - 17 lb. test leader, in order to use both the DS and the bottom jig as a lure. Hook setting would your main concern - in my opinion.

However, to each his own....give it a whirl!
