Suspending fish up...down...straight ahead????

Featured Replies

Hey all....

When fish are suspended, do they tend to look up towards the surface, down towards the bottom, or straight ahead/side to side??

Give your opinion (or facts) and why you feel that way.  :)

Suspended as opposed to swimming? Bass spend a big part of their time suspended at one depth level and obviously use the eyes to see all around them, except directly behind. They use their other senses to provide awareness of what the can't see.

Suspended bass are no different then a swimming bass with the exception a swimming bass is active and and suspended bass may not be. Bass tend to suspend at a depth level that is comfortable and provides sanctuary.

If you are asking how do bass attack prey when suspended; that depends on what type of prey the bass are looking for and the depth they are suspended.

While suspending.I think they look in all directions constantly. Always being observant of the surrounding areas.

Bass don't have eye lids so the see whatever is within their sight window. They do get very inactive at times and appear to be sleeping as they suspend. A lure coming from directly behind can sometimes spook them, one reason it is better to cast on top of an ambush site to prevent spooking the bass or approach it at an angle that gives the bass a chance to see it coming.

The bass have eyes near the top of their head, so they tend to see well up and to the sides and forward, need to roll slighty to see down and turn to see directly behind. Inactive bass tend to be stationary, so down and behind are nearly blind spots in their sight window. Active act nervous even when suspended, so they can see all around fairly well, except straight down and directly behind.

Whenever I have dealt with suspended fish I've noticed that the strike zone shrinks down to a very small window. I will always try to fish in front of them or just above. They usually wont travel too far to eat, when and if they eat at all.
