Yes lead weights, my first time ever drop shotting yesterday at a local pond. I'm in the 11-13 range and I was paddling around because the man that allows me to fish  has a paddle boat. anyway, I was drop shotting around the sprinkler in the middle of the pond and got a bite, so I set the hoke and after i reeled the bass in, the weight was gone. I actually lost a couple weights yesterday from the fish pulling them off and im afraid that the water will be poisoned and kill fish so I'm asking you guys and girls if lead weights will kill the bass.  :-?

Lead should not bother bass or any other fish. Lead, in high dose, can be harmfull to water fowl.

I think people need to be more concerned with soft plastics ending up in the water than a few peices of lead.

If this were the case, most of the lakes in the country would have very few fish left in them. People have been using lead weights for many years.

No, lead is only dangerous to birds with crops that use sand grit and pebbles to aid in digestion. Sometimes lead is inadvertently picked up and rattles around in their crop and ends up killing the bird.

ok guys, thanks anyway I also have a different way of tying a drop shot rig. 1. Take the line and run it through the hook, take a big tag and instead of tying a palomar or uni knot, tie a clinch knot.

2. run the line through the eye again so it stands sideways.

3. instead of a drop shot weight just get a sinker and tie a clinch knot on that. But you will have to retie the weight afte every fish.

4. Put a 6" Wave Tiki Trick Worm in Watermelon black flake and your ready to go! it's a killer method. trust me. I'm young but I have a good sized knowledge for fishing. 8-)

The weights are probably falling off during the fight. I do not think they are taken by the fish. The next time you drop shot, tie an overhand knot (or two) with the extra tag after you clipped on your weight.

Doing this should prevent the weight for slipping off of the line.  I do this when I think the clip might slip through the line.

Now after fishing this way, if the weights indeed are gone, then I would say you have lead craving bass.  ;D

x 2 I use a simple overhand knot.The weight will still slip or break off in the event it gets snagged.

You can use inexpensive Water Gremlin or similar bell sinkers. The weight shouldn't come off unless you pull hard enough to nearly break the line.

Lead becomes toxic to aquatic life at .2 to .25 ppm. Fish will seem to form a mucus over their gills. Short answer, no a few sinkers is not enough to cause a fish kill.

My state will be putting a total lead ban in place by 2012. Right now only certain bodies of water prohibit the use of lead in sinkers. Another "politically correct" move on the part of some stupid politicians. Has little/no basis in fact.

And the real kicker is, TUNGSTEN is 10X as toxic to everything living as lead is! Go figure!  ;D

That would be a sad day indeed.  I think this country would see a cival war on their hands...Anglers vs. any opponent of fishing.  I have the gut feeling there are a lot of anglers out there.

If you are always losing weights, and have to retie after every fish, doesn't that tell you that what you're doing is not working that well?  I would look into a different rig.

Unfortunately, anglers are not a very organized or congruous group of people. Fly fisherpersons, bait men, lure throwers, tournament pros. None willing to "get together" the way the shooting fraternity has with organizations like G.O.A.L. and the N.R.A.. We could take a lesson from those groups! We're too....discombobulated.... if that's a word!?  ;D

yeah, that doesnt make sense at all to me. i dont get why you would have to retie after every fish
